Our dog Finley is quite mischievious, most recently when we went to Cynthia’s summer work party last weekend. It was held at a kind of Teambuilding/corporate event outdoors place on a big farm where you could do 4wd landrover stuff, go karts, bouncy castle and lots of other things, and dogs were welcome.
Anyway, as it was Finley’s first birthday recently and we bought him a posh leather collar with his name stamped on it and a nice engraved tag as part of the collar itself we decided to let him wear it to this event where he would be meeting so many people and children so he would look his best.
Anyway, we even gave him a bath in the morning and a good brushing and with his new collar he looked just dandy. Cynthia had assured me that there was no body of water on the farm so we felt relatively sure he would stay relatively clean and dry (for a dog at least).
So we got there and when a yellow lab called Winston arrived, we decided to let them off lead in the woodlands on the estate to use up some energy. So Finley immediately finds a HUGE mudbath and jumps in headfirst. He then proceeds to roll around and around and around in the mud as if it were 100 percent proof Fox jobby aftershave!
He is TOTALLY covered in brown goo! And let’s not forget about Winston! Winston inadvertently lumbered in after Finley and got a facefull of brown goop for his trouble. I forgot to say that Winston is a 10 year old intact male, bless his heart, who was trying to do the ‘top dog’ thing by frantically humping the place where Finley had been standing a few seconds ago as Finley rolled in the dirt in blissful ignorance. Winston’s owner was killing himself laughing as Finley did another crocodile death roll in the mud as I raised my eyes heavenwards and prayed for divine intervention requesting a huge mythical bird to come down and carry Finley off and return him clean and fresh as a daisy or failing that, to carry me off so I didn't have to face Cynthia with a brown dog on the end of the lead!
I stood there thinking… just over the brow of the hill are 150 people in nice clean clothes chatting away, and down here we have 2 dogs wearing all-body mudpacks.
So do I go in after him and get as dirty as he is or do I call him out and have him wreak havoc amongst the general populous? He’s bound to find the only person wearing an all white outfit purchased the day before….
I couldn’t even SEE his collar anymore he was so dirty. And he just looked at me, did the Head tilt thing, as if to say “What?”
So I did the honourable thing and waded in to grab where I thought his collar was. I then took him out of the woods to a hosepipe they had been using for filling up water ballons and washed as much of the dirt off as possible. I then decided I better take him home…. It was only in the car on the way home that I started to laugh…and I decided not to take him to the Glue Factory after all!

Lol, sounds like fun was had by all.
We had a similar incident with Hally after taking her on the beach when the tide was out. My beautiful chocolate dog turned an ugly shade of grey right up to her neck (thankfully she didn't roll in it) but of course had a wash when she finally got to the sea.
But that wasn't the end of the story as we had to get back, and the wet fur was a magnet for this 'goo' topped off by a light dusting of fresh brown sand
Needless to say I love her unconditionally, but with a new, high monthly loan repayment car, other half and stepson ended up having to walk her a good few miles home . - to say my name was "mud"
Dog had a whale of a time, but why don't they put hose pipes at these places?
