Hi,
In the last week or so, Toby (almost 1 year old) has starting kicking his legs on his walks. It's difficult to explain what he does, but it's almost like he is trying to damage the grass or remove something from his paws. He sometimes does it after he has been to the toilet but not always
I was just wondering what this behaviour means or what the purpose of it is through curiosity.
Thanks.
Many dogs will do this, usually after toileting as you say, its to spread their scent after as far a range as they can possibly get it, lets all the locals know they are around and nothing to worry about
Pud does this too - it's like he knows he is supposed to do it but not quite sure why! He completely misses the spot! And I usually get covered in grass too!
Dogs have scent glands in their feet, so by scrapping them it leaves a message to other dogs.....and as others have said, it is to draw attention to the other "message" they have left. Shame us humans spoil the whole effect by scooping it up
