SILVER LABRADORS; I am not sure if this is the right place to bring this subject up. But I have just been told that some one in the UK has imported several Silver Labradors from the USA, they have been registered as chocolates and a litter is now on the ground and will also be registered as chocolates. As I don't live in your country I can't check to see if this is correct or not, perhaps someone can, as I think we need to stop this before it gets a foot hold in the UK. We are trying to stop the one and only silver breeder in our country and while pups have been registered here as chocolates ( but are in fact Silver cross breds) we are trying to have these deregistered, the fight goes on I am afraid.
You`ll have plenty of members on this site backing you up Trisha, I have no idea if what you say is true, one of the members that breeds or is more up on Lab things than me, may know or have heard something on the grapevine.
Have to say I don`t like the "Silver" Lab myself, but sadly as with all else Lab and other breeds if people are prepared to buy them there`ll always be a supply
I'm sure many of the breeders will know better what the downsides of all this is (narrow gene pools?), but my own view is that it smacks of a new fad which can only be bad news.
Wouldn't it be nice if people went looking for Labs, or any other dog, because they were from stock with an excellent track record in terms of health, temperament and training not because of some kind of novelty value. I think anyone who puts the colour of a Lab before these other considerations is just looking for trouble.
can u explain further i have never heard of silver labs and i dont understand why you think it is bad an want it stopped
fledgling
.
Because they are cross breeds. The breeders fraudulently register these puppies as chocolates.
The general thought is that at some point a labrador was crossed with a Wei. to produce the silver colour and the bright blue eyes. The first "silver" was produce in the US around the 1940's where as the Labrador as a breed has been around about 100 years longer than that WITHOUT there being a silver produced. Suddenly out of the US comes a silver labrador something breeders in the UK ( correct me if I am wrong) have never bred despite breeding for over 100 years. Labradors come in 3 colours Black yellow and chocolate, not silver, grey, charcoal or white as I have seen listed on some silver breeders sites. Just google Silver Labradors and any number of sites will come up, however you won't know if you are looking at a silver Labrador or a Wei, they look very much the same.
I think they already have a small foothold in the UK, as I've heard on the grapevine of more than one breeder of these dogs.
I haven't seen any yet and the photos I've seen on the Net all look very strange and Weimie like.
I can't say I like them, but no doubt others will and I have no idea how you could register a litter with the KC if they are cross breeds (unless they lie about the parentage ).
I think there is very little anyone can do to stop people breeding them, as there is no doubt a market for the pups....."Different" seems to be the in thing at the moment.
It was bound to happen I'm afraid. were they originally crossbreeds? Who knows. But in the photos I've seen they dont look good quality Labradors to me. I doubt you will ever get them deregistered though and like all crazes, they will catch on amongst those with more money than sense as a "Status Symbol"
It's so sad what some people are doing to the breed we love.
