Question about doggy geneology programs... which ones are the best?

What kinda stuff can you put in them? EG I know you can put in colour, health test results, sex, DOB, DOD (if applicable)... but what else goes in there?

I guess I'm asking why I'd use a geneology program rather than just build an Access Database of my own?

Also, where do you get all your data from - can you apply to the Kennel Club for pedigrees of dogs that you don't own?

Thanks in advance

Ness

A lot of breeders use Breeders Assistant. The website is www.tenset.co.uk. The prices start at £99.
The kennel club will only give out information of dogs that you have the registration number for. There are a good number of sites that have extensive databases of labradors. Sue51 & JohnW are very knowledgeable and have helped me many times in the past.
Good luck. By the way searching for pedigrees can become very addictive!

I'd love to know the answer to this.

I wish the KC would set up some kind of online database, useable for a small fee and allowing owners to trace their dog's ancestry back more easily. Just KC reg. names with colour, date of birth/death if known would be sufficient. No need to give details of owners or their descendants.

As for computer software, I have heard there is one called Breedmate available, and I will work on getting hubby to buy it for me for my next birthday Wink . I have listed Charlie's pedigree on an Excel spreadsheet, but can see it getting too cumbersome soon.

Helen.

Alyson, any idea where you'd get that registration number from? I haven't gone and dug out Ozzie's pedigree paperwork to check, but I am pretty sure that I don't have the reg nos for his ancestors named on his pedigree... just names and titles where they've earnt them.

Thanks for the info!

I started tracing CJ`s back after Sue told me she`d found loads of his ancestors, I got Breedmate, just been looking for it though and i have a horrible feeling I lost it when my old machine crashed Shocked Crying or Very sad

I had loads of dogs on there as well!!, Sue gave me several links of places to go and check out names of dogs I had, think I ended up with the better part of a thousand and didn`t actually finish looking Very Happy

I use Breedmate - www.breedmate.com - recommended by JohnW.

I did consider 'developing' something myself, but to be honest, for what I paid for it, it really isn't worth the hassle.

It can produces ancestry charts at the touch of a button - produce offspring lists, calculate inbreeding co-efficients, produce 3 to 5 generation pedigrees with various different info (or you can 'design' your own style of pedigree) - abd can produce up to 10 gen pedigrees for research purposes

Re: the info it accommodates - everything from Dogs KC and Call names to different breeds, hip scores, elbow scores, colours, show results, owner and breeder info - it can identify ancestry at the touch of a button, and identify shared ancestry between one or more dogs Very Happy - very handy little product Very Happy

I would imagine the other products offer similar facilities - but whatever you use - I think it is safe to say that the development effort has already been put in and for less than £100 you can take advantage of it Very Happy

I have got over 9,000 records in mine now and have yet to encounter any major problems that haven;t been caused by human error Embarassed (i.e. mine Confused )
