Hi There!

I've been reading these forums for a few weeks and would like to thank you all for your wonderful contributions. I have learned so much Smile

Poppy is my 16 week old black lab. http://indy.zippysoft.com/photos/Poppy/ for a few snaps. I dont know how to add thumbnail pics. My first ever dog and what a learning experience it has been. She is so lovely.

Might be a silly question, but what sort of bones can I give her to chew on? Pets@home were useless when I asked. Too many different types to choose from Sad

Hi!

Congratulations firtsly on your beautiful Poppy - she looks stunning!!

I tend to buy the filled bones for my dogs, and when Charlie was a pup he had them as well - we only ever used to give them to him when we were here though so we could keep an eye on him!

Hope that helps

Hi there

Welcome to the Forum! Have had a look at your piccies - Poppy is gorgeous! Love the one of her with the football!

The bones I use for Smudge are Nylabones - more info here http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=10&pf_id=0465 Here is a pic of him at Christmas trying to get to his 'Nyla' which he loves:-

We all used to walk around with a Nylabone in our hand at Christmas to give him something else to chew on other than us! lol!

To echo what Sarah has said, I would only let Smudge have a bone if I was with him to keep an eye on him.

All the best and look forward to hearing all about Poppy.

Nic

Hi there. Poppy is so sweet and i love the small video footage of her, its lovely she looks gorgous!

I give Leo both what CharlieBrewer and SmudgesMum said.
He has a nylabone for daily chewing, and he gets a filled bone for an extra little treat sometimes.
Leo loves both but he does enjoy his extra special filled bone Smile

Hi and welcome.

I had the same question and found the general consensus is the only place to get real bones (edible) from was good old fashioned butchers.

The bones that are ok for the dogs and hold the least risk are uncooked ones, as they are soft and also hold nutritional value. (anything cooked aparently removes most the nutrients, and more importantly makes them brittle and dangerous as sharp fragments could cause serious damage to the dogs insides)

e.g. Amazingly the comments that chicken bones are highly dangerous is true only when they are cooked, and for those who feed their dogs raw meat diet (BARF) giving a dog a raw chicken leg whole to munch on is normal.

You may find as I have however that obtaining the large beef marrowbones/knuckles you will be seeking are hard to come by. I have found a couple of decent local butchers who can supply them...... but they have 2 week waiting list Shocked ..... the butcher laughed cause he can sell the bones faster than the beef Laughing

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and advice. I will pop into a butchers and see what I can sort out.

I have bought a nylabone, hopefully its enough for now to keep her from chewing everything else Smile
