Since Charlie got attacked by a staffie a couple of weeks ago I have lost all confidence in taking him out on my own.
His recall at home and in the garden is spot on and also spot on in the park if no-one is around.
However the excitement of seeing another dog is all too much and recall goes out of the window as he races off ignoring me completely.
Having said that, he was brilliant at Clumber Park yesterday.
So, I've booked a 1:1 session at 10.00 o'clock in the morning.
Please wish us luck and I'll let yo know how we get on tomorrow
Good idea Wendy...its horrible if you loose confidence walking your dog when walking should be one of the greatest pleasures of dog-ownership. I went through a phase once when Flo was a youngster and very unreliable with recalls and generally getting into mischief, and I used to dread walking her sometimes. I started singing that advert for Dr Papper...it went something like " Dr Pepper, whats the worse that can happen..?" under my breath to myself and it really helped me to chill a bit! I'm terrible for thinking 'worse case scenario' about everything and that little ditty helped me get things into perspective (even if it made me look a bit nutty!!!! )
Wendy - don't start doubting yourself - it will all come right. I'm sure the trainer will give you some different things to try and also help with getting you to feel confident again.
Part of it will be age - Zadie's recall has come on leaps & bounds over the last 6 months (she's now 2) - and, in the main, she will now leave other dogs, kids playing football, etc. The things that have helped us were using a whistle as it seems to get through to them when hollering like a fishwife doesn't and getting her to focus on a ball when she looks like she's getting bored and might decide to visit everyone in sight! However she's far from perfect - rabbits, birds, etc are still way too tempting and I have to avoid one field completely as she always cops a deaf 'un in there as it's full of lovely rabbit smells.
