Having had multiple dogs for quite some time, I realised this morning that those of you thinking about adding another dog, may not know that seasons affect all the dogs in the pack.

When one comes into season, unless there is a way of keeping her totally seperate, all dogs are going to have that same "red-hot woman" smell about them. Maybe not in such a strong way, but I have in the past had male dogs getting amorous with my girls, when it's the one left at home that is in season. Rolling Eyes So this causes me to walk even the spayed ones away from other dogs, as much as I can, for a few weeks. Plus I end up having to give all of them a bath once the season has ended, just to thoroughly get rid of the smell.

For those of you that already have male dogs, even if they are castrated, living with an in-season girlie can change their behaviours. I've known castrated males "hump" the bitch and in more than one instance actually tie Shocked although obviously no pups resulted in this. I've also known castrated male dogs to guard their "red hot woman" against all other dogs.

So all in all, just one bitch in season can change the usual routines and life in a multi dog household.

I can think of no better reason than to have bitches spayed for the good of their health and to stop unwanted pregnancies, but it is also so worth having it done, just so that life stays on an even keel. Wink

totally agree with you Jules.

When Annie came into season, Henry did try to hump her, but did get told off very swiftly by Annie and never tried it again. Laughing He knows who the boss is.

Anyway, when I took Henry out, quite a few male dogs did try to hump him, obviously had Annie's smell on him.
