Sara will be 5 months next week and at training last night she was very very vocal.

She is coming on very well with training and my trainer said to me last night she is doing very well and i must be very proud of her which i am and she would put her up to the next class, but let her be a puppy for a bit longer.

It it just the vocal side of it, i have had a problem with bailey being vocal at training as well.

I have searched through this section, i don't clicker train, i use praise and reward. do i have to teach speak and be quiet or can i just teach be quiet.

Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou x

We had a similar problem with Paddy - he was very vocal at class....

We actually taught Speak 1st, do do this everytime we knew he was going to bark - he barked through frustration/boredom at class - every time he barked we would wind him up even more and tell him 'Good boy Paddy, speak, Good boy - yes speak thats it' over and over and as soon as he stopped, literally the milisecond he stopped we said the word quiet and gave him a treat - we did use a clicker with him though as a quick click is quicker than telling him he is a good boy, if that makes sense.

It did take us a while for him to get the hang of it but now he only barks if we tell him to speak (well 98% of the time anyway) Wink

Thankyou Sarah Very Happy
Can i ask how old paddy is?

I would prefer not to clicker train only because i'm whistle training and i don't want to confuse them with any more noises.

Would the method be the same if i just use praise and reward?

Paddy is 7 months now, and my word has tested my patience to the max so very many times with his barking/ignoring me but (fingers crossed) I think we are turning a corner with him.

Yes, praise and treats would work exactly the same as the clicker - gee her up getting her to Speak, soon as she is silent toss her a treat and say Ssshhhh or quiet, whatever word you will be using Smile

Good luck, keep me posted Wink
