Hi Bailey is now 15 weeks and is never been a big eater but at the moment he isn't eating much at all. I did him his bakers complete for breakfast 100g but he only ate less than half so i gave him 75g for lunch and again not eaten much still less than half. I think i know him well now and i think he is holding out for some chicken etc. If i cook roast chicken, beef etc i give him a bit and he loves it and if i stuff his kong with meat he loves it,so i know he will eat but just not dog food but he is just holding out for his kong later this evening hoping it will have meat in. How long will he go hungry? he sits near the oven and is whinning today. Thanks Sarah

ps i have tried him with several brands of dog food but he seems to get bored of it after a few days.

Hi Sarah,

Charlie also went through a stage of not eating much, he still does it sometimes now at 23 weeks! First thing is that Bailey is might be teething, have a look at his gums see if they're swollen? Charlie has been teething since about 18 weeks so I have been watering down his food with luke warm water and he gobbles it up.

I try not to do it everyday but at the moment his teeth have been falling out so I have been doing it for all meals.

At christmas time, he had an upset tummy so the vet put him on a boiled chicken and rice diet, he loved it! however when I had to put him back on the dried dog food diet he was not too pleased with me and would look at his food then at me, as if to say 'where's the nice stuff?' But I just didn't give him anything else for a few days and would take his meal away after 15 minutes, eventually he went back to eating his own food. Don't give into him whinning for meat, he will stop when he gets hungry, I know I found it heartbreaking when he wouldn't eat but as everyone kept telling me, labs don't go hungry!

Finally, I found that I was giving Charlie too many treats, so once I cut down on the treats (only for training and a little playtime), at meals times he was much more ravenous.

Hang on in there, don't let him decide what he eats otherwise he will become a fussy eater.

Have you tried James Wellbeloved? I changed Charlie to that and it has helped, also Burns is highly recommended but Charlie didn't get on with it.

Good luck!

We're all in the same boat, I'm still learning so please let me know how you get on!

Karin

Hello

i agree with what Karin has said about soaking the food - helps make it smell better etc. Not a great fan of Bakers tho due to all the nasty stuff in it.

After Coal had been ill we did mix a little bit of Nature Diet (its moist meat) in with his dried Burns and he loved that so that might be worth a try. Nature diet is a good moist food as is Chappie.

he probably is trying to see what you'll give him if he doesn't eat so don't give in - but could try just a little bit of met mixed in with the dried to make it more appealing.

hope that help Smile

Hello My Harvey was going through a stage of not eating, I went to the vets and he told me to try Harvey on some cat food (pilchards) I did that. Stirring one table spoon of pilchards with his normal puppy food. Harvey went crazy. he loves it.

Hi Sarah, my little one is the same age as yours, i have just changed her over to James Wellbeloved, you can get a free sample from their website. I read a post that Di had replied in and she said that JWB smells like shepherds Pie, so i went to investigate Wink and once you have soaked it, yes it does Very Happy it smells lovely Wink

Nushka is 16 months now but she still has days when she wont eat much. she went through a no eating few days just last week. now you may think i am mean but if she doesnt eat i pick it up after 15 mins then try again at tea time. and i never give her anything but her food or carrott. but if she does not eat her meal i dont even give her a carrott. i learnt very early on she is very clever and if she thinks she is gonna get sommat else she wont eat and it upsets her tummy so i just stick things and it works for us.
all the best
