We met a GR on our walk today that we haven't met before - he was lovely, Oscar - only 9 months old - but he wouldn't leave Danny alone...
I know that this can be a dominance thing and Danny is pretty submissive with large dogs, but Danny seemed really distressed by the experience and kept trying to run away. Oscar's owner just shouted at him, which obviously had no effect - but I was worried that as Oscar was a bit bigger than Danny that he may do him some harm - is this possible??
Also what's the best way to deal with a humping dog when its not your own? Danny has never displayed this tendancy and if he did I would pull him off by the collar - the GR however was not wearing a collar...

To be honest - I wouldn't have pulled the GR off by his collar - you don't know what reaction he will have.....
As an owner of a humper its nothing to do with dominance. With Doobs, its the hormones given off by Millie and Gracie which is sending him in a tizz, and now he feels that its far too irrestible not to hump any dog. I have been working with him over this on the last few days with Di's advice, and it seems to be really paying off.
To be honest, if Danny really felt it that annoying, he would have told this GR so! The only thing you can do is shout to the owner to pull the dog off and walk away.
I grab them by the scruff and pull them off if they have no collar on and give a good "GERROFF" at the same time.
I did have a problem once with a Weimeraner that leapt on and tried to rape my old girl (and yes she has been spayed ), there was no owner around that I could see, so I went to grab it. It curled it's lip up at me (bad move)....My old girl was getting distressed....she has a bad back too.....so I walloped it right up the bum with my walking stick and shouted at it....It didn't come back for seconds. I never did see the owner either.
As the owner of a serial humping victim, I carry a lovely Austrian walking stick (not the kind used by the infirm, but the kind used by leiderhosen clad, beer drinking, oompah band listening walkers )
It is far safer to tap/whack/wallop the dog on the bum than use my hands/feet to get them off Max should we meet Max's nemisis's, the pair hooligans who mean no harm but both of whom will just not leave him alone and hump him senseless
PS..........what is a GR?

That's the problem isn't it.....The last thing I want is my dogs turning on another......apart from the fact that it can become a habit, it can also then turn into a big nasty fight.
I'd rather risk pulling off the offender or giving it a whack up the bum (and risk the owner moaning), than end up with my own dogs developing behavioural problems or having big vets bills for stitches.
