No, he's not retarded...Merlot's very intelligent. He even picked out his own name. When I brought him home from the breeder last December at just 5 weeks old, I had him tucked under my arm and sat him on the kitchen table, where my wife was sitting, and said"Merry Christmas!" He was so cute with his big blue eyes, and my wife said "What shall we name him?" He then took his over sized puppy paw and knocked over the goblet of Merlot wine that my wife was holding, thus the name,"Merlot". He was also 100 percent house trained at only 7 weeks old! Merlot never had an "accident" after 7 weeks. He would stand at the back door and whine if he had to go. Now, to get to the subject, I walk him 2 miles to the park every morning and Merlot jumps in the lake every morning, rain or shine, warm or cold..unless the lake is frozen over, and swims. But, Merlot doesn't dog paddle like a normal dog, he does a crawl stroke like a human! His front legs are never under water like they should be. He swims like a human, spash, splash, spash! He looks very foolish and other dog owners burst out laughing when they watch him. It is quite embarrassing. Any suggestions?

Awwww it may be embarrasing but it sounds really cute !!
Abbey doesnt swim like other dogs either , she has her head well above the water and paws right out in front of her out of the water a little too !!
It is rather hard to describe but she doesnt look like other dogs swimming thats for sure
Abbey would rather splish splash in her depth than swim in deep water.
I dont know if it is possible to teach them to swim properly or not im sure someone will have the answer soon
I suppose dogs are like humans some of us love to swim and others hate the water on their face .
You will have to take a piccie of Merlot swimming for us to see !

Why worry about his style As long as he enjoys it let him carry on as he is.
You'll have to capture it on video.
Inceidentally, my other dog does a front crawl too, she takes long graceful strokes, really reaching forward, I think she looks beautiful swimming

I think they can probably all swim when they have to, but not all would choose to. Charlie too would choose simply to splash about in his depth rather than anything else, but he certainly could swim when he once did fall into a lake.
I would not worry about his style. Let him do as he likes, and just post a video for us to see.
