Actually, I usually just use tinned marrowfat processed peas and squish them onto the toast.

Takes me back to my youth 
It never harmed me (or them - all of us still alive at last count 
). Sometimes I still just luuurrve a lunch of hot buttered toast with marmite on it. I always have to have some in the cupboard. My daughter puts it on crumpets too.
