Hi

Is it alright to give dogs Yakult that is meant for us to eat, as a friend of mines dog has a digestion problem, and she does not want to go to the vet just yet.

Any problems should be treated by a vet 1st Colette, it could be more than a simple digestive problem and may need further investigation.

If there is something wrong with the dogs digestive system I would take it straight to the vet before it gets worse, if there is nothing wrong then fair enough but its best to be on the safe side and he can advice her on a diet to suit the dog.

I agree with Kay, see the vet first but I have doubts that Yakult or any other dairy based probiotic is effective given the way a dogs digestion system works. My feelings are any benefits would be nullified by the stomach acid long before it had time to work on the flora of the gut

JMO, I know others disagree and have great faith yoghurt Wink

I have same view as nigel. Dylan has to take a probiotic powder with his food and will for the rest of his life it seems due to his digetive problems. but I had a number of visits to vets, tests and finally a prolonged experiment with his diet to establish the ingredients in his diet he could tollerate and those he couldnt.

good probiotics for dogs are 'microencapsulated' which is a fancy way for saying coated in a protective layer so they dont get killed of before they get to where they are needed.

Vets 1st, probiotic and diet 2nd. Wink

Many thanks I will pass the information on to her, her dog you see is having too may changes in diet for nothing to be wrong. I have been trying to tell her to go to the vet for the good of her dog, maybe now she will listen.

is she aimlessly changing foods to 'find' one that works? This was unfortunately my vets approach once we had ilimenated an infection. personally I use naturediet food and was fortunate they have lots of combinations of ingredients so you can quite easily try different combinations over a number of weeks to see which work and which dont. Dylan cant have chicken so now has lamb and fish variants every day coupled with prodiotic (naturezyme) which touch wood leaves him with a solid constitution lol.

Certain peoples attitudes towards dog care around where I live is appaulling, they seem to suit themselves and to heck with any advice.
I am wondering if what you are saying in digestive problems, the things you are giving your dog whether it might help my dog and her anal gland problem, if I give her certain things. I know some dogs are more prone to it than others, but I am trying to find anything that helps ellie out.

Hope this makes sense
