I got a quote from petplan and thinking of going with it. It does say though that after the dog reaches 10 years old i will have to pay 20% treatment costs. Is this normal for any insurance companies? Also if you dont take out top cover but feel you need it halfway through can you swap?

Making you pay a % of bills after a certain age, on top of the excess, is standard but the % amount might vary a bit between policies.

I think petplan is probably about the best out there, but also often one of the most expensive.

With regard to upgrading the policy, you can move to a policy with more cover but I think generally you would then lose cover for anything already treated for. I know I checked this out with Petplan once when thinking of moving one of my dogs up to a more expensive policy but as I had claimed for x-rays etc. when she was much younger, the new policy wouldn't have covered her for anything arising from that condition, even though I would have been paying more money each month and with the same company Sad Although policies may vary from company to company and I've not asked for a while.
