oh god I think I've done something awful.

Ivor has had an infection on his chin weve had anti biotics from the vet he has finished the course and its not helped so I've made an appointment for the vet for tomorrow to take him back.

so today he's been really gurny and barking <he never barks> so I thought I had read on here that it is ok to give him calpol.

so I gave him 5mls of calpol and he's settled down

then I came on here and read an old thread where someone said it might be fatal to give dogs paracetomol

please any advice would be wonderful

Which calpol was it? the 'baby' or ''six' plus? how old is he?

I have given Clover Calpol when she was a pup and had cystitis and was very distressed - on the advice of an experienced breeder through desperation in the middle of the night - with no long lasting ill effects.

I am sure it will be fine - BUT - that said - if you do have concerns - ring your local emergency vet centre, they are usually very helpful in giving out advice -

I've given my dogs Paracetamol before and they were fine. I think it's cats you have to be very careful with. Wink

To be honest the effects would be fairly quick, or no later than when it got into his system, so if he is fine now, just a tiny bit sleepy, then no harm done. i think they are tougher than we think and a lot of the alarmist warnings are just because a minority of dogs might be affected so a general warning is given to all - take chocolate, some dogs take it dreadfully badly even with a small amount, others wolf a bar of green a blacks 80% cocoa down without anything but a grin and a burp!

Good luck!

Paracetomol can be very dangerous so dogs, but yes, not all dogs react quite the same and it is more dangerous to some than to others. The problem of course being that you wont know if your dog is one of the susceptible or not until it's too late! So on that score, dont give it.

Saying that, I think Paracetomol is just one of the active ingredience in calpol so I doubt it is as strong as taking a Paracetomol tablet. I would just keep a weather eye open on the situation.

Regards, John

Don't stress - you were only doing what you thought was the best for your boy.

I had a recent experience with painkillers. One Saturday morning, we came downstairs to find that Honey had escaped from her crate and chewed on my handbag, Inside were a packet of anadin extra which she had feasted on, so we were straight out to the emergency vets who checked her over and given the quantities, did not feel it necessary to pump her tummy. He did, however, warn us that the caffeine would do her as much harm as the painkillers - true enough - she was totally hyper all day. Jumped straight into the river (never having swam before, in the cold Scottish winter) and swan about like a nutter!! Then rolled around in the frosty grass and ran a million circles before we got home.

Point is, she was absolutely fine afterwards, unlike me who was a complete wreck and guilt ridden that she had munched my bag (nice bag too!!!!)

Hope all goes well with your boy - try not to worry!
