Hi,

One of my show girls needs to loose around 2kgs of weight Embarassed

She is normailly fed on AG Lamb kibble but I cant cut her food down anyomore. She is already on a full measuring cup split into 3 meals per day. The vet says she has a slow metabolism (I think I have too Very Happy

) as reducing her food and increasing her exercise is not working. I am looking at feeding her AG light but am worried that her coat condition will suffer due to only 7.5% oil/fat or the other option is Royal Canin Labrador 30, as it says "ideal weight formula" but is still quite high in fat 13%.

Any one got any thoughts please Very Happy

Does she swim often, as this is great way of getting them to drop weight?

A 5 min swim is the equivalent of a 5 mile run, so I've just read on a Hydrotherapy site....so if you were to swim her a couple of times a week, that would up the amount of calories burnt signifcantly. <Thinking aloud, this may explain why my Mojo is so slim as she swims every week for 20 mins or more......So bless her, she is running a marathon every week and I never knew Laughing

I've never used a "light" formula but I suppose if it has less calories then she "should" lose weight. 2kgs isn't really a lot to lose, so maybe you could switch back to her normal food as soon as she has lost the weight.

CRIKEY I knew swimming was good exercise but good grief!!! My two swim daily for a alot longer than five minutes and this is during our hour-hour and a half walk!

I think cutting her food intake slightly and increasing her daily exercise will do wonders for her and as said above swimming is fantastic for them.
edited as I just noticed you said cutting food and more exercise is not helping sorry should really read properly rather than skim through.

When we had some glorious weather a few weeks back I was taking the dogs out with my bike they got a fab workout doing this (we went out in the evening when it was nice an cool) It is not so appealing though in the rain and wind that we now have lol is this something you could try? what sort of walks do you do?? do you vary the terrain? some on the flat some up hill etc a swim most days..

Hi,

She does a mile roadwalk to a lake, loads of swimming and a mile back, 5 days a week! Maybe it will just take longer than I had hoped, but its been 2 months now and only very minimal weight loss.

I suppose if she is only has 2kgs to lose and she isn't gaining anymore, then I probably wouldn't worry too much. Just like in humans, some people can eat loads and do little, yet remain slim...others do loads, don't over indulge, yet are always a bit plump.....she could just be like the second type.

I would be far more concerned if she was 10kgs or more overweight, as some dogs are.

Personally I would try the Arden Grange Light, I put Honey on the Labrador RC food when it came out and she put weight on, I don't think the calories are that restricted!
If her coat condition suffered perhaps you could try an oil capsule in her food?

I think lamb is quite high in calories as dog food meat goes? Does AG do a fish one as they can be lighter in calories so you could perhaps feed her the same amount but with less calorific content?
