It's amazing how many people cope in silence with such seemingly difficult situations, yet feel all the better from the lessons they learn from their lovely kids. It's a funny old world! Wouldn't ever swap them!

Joe had about five words that he'd say until he started at school. I had to request a statement for him twice before they accepted him. There is no way he would cope in mainstream school, as he can't sit still and since he has been working with his teachers he is a right little chatterbox! It was the best feeling ever the night I told him 'Mommy loves you' before he went to sleep, as I do every night, and for the first time he answered 'Jonah loves you, too'. There were times I never thought I'd hear that. Of course, now that he can talk, he sweet-talks me into getting what he wants. His favorite line of 'attack' includes 'you're so pretty!'. Laughing I'm such a sucker when it comes to him.

I do love that he tells the truth. Even when he's done something he shouldn't. He gave himself a HUGE bruise on his arm by biting himself while I was feeding rabbits awhile back, and when I asked him what happened, he not only told me, he preceeded to give me a demonstration before I told him he shouldn't bite himself. I'm with you guys, I wouldn't trade him for the world! A former friend once asked me if I'd still have had him if I'd known he wouldn't be 'normal' (cue the bristling hairs and canine-type twitching lip... I can't stand people telling me my child isn't normal), and I told her that of COURSE I would, and that I was extremely offended by the question. He is a challenge, but he wouldn't be Jonah if he were any different.

I could not agree with you more, you know as I have said before we are the lucky ones to get to share these special children! I have also been asked would I still have had my son ( who is nearly 11), i smiled and did not answer, thinking to myself 'what an idiotic question' from a total moronic person (that is the nice way of putting what i thought Laughing Laughing )

Family on the other hand, they try but dont understand but that is there loss not mine, I know I am the lucky one Very Happy

So you are not alone and as Mo has already said, just post if you need to talk, that is the hardest thing not being able to know you are not alone!

Take care

Linda

My Jack is extremely challenging, although a lot better since on Ritalin, education wise his work, although not completely legible (dyslexia) has jumped up 2 levels and they asked him to if he would tell the forth coming new head teacher what he liked about his school - bad mistake he didn't shut up for 30 mins Laughing Laughing

He never is quiet, but hey at least I know where he Very Happy

I often find it frustrating that people think just because Patrick does not talk he must be totally dependent & completely unable to do things even people who work with children with special needs find it amusing when i tell him to do something & he does it !

prime example Patrick gets of school bus & i tell him to go home while i sort his wheel chair o out, he walks to the front door where dad is waiting school bus driver says wow I didn't think he'd do that !!

I just think that people don't think, Patrick may be non verbal but he does communicate, you just have to bother to take the time to get to know him & his ways, most people just don't bother & 2 us its totally their loss

Absolutely! I can't stand it when people assume Joe is unable to do for himself at all. Granted, there is a fair bit he can't do easily, but he does try, bless him! What gets me the most is when people are talking about him, and how difficult he must be etc, and he is standing right there. When they get to the point where they are beginning to be insulting (not that I think they are TRYING to be, it just comes across that way), I have to remind them, he is only Autistic, he can hear you, please mind what you say. Jonah doesn't get offended, but I do... enough for the both of us, really! Sometimes it is hard to know just how much he DOES understand regarding what they are saying, and I just don't want to risk it that his feelings will be hurt. I'm trying to raise him like I would any other child, but I will freely admit that I protect him like a momma tigress when I feel the need!
