Hi all,
I was just wondering to what extent AI and frozen sperm
have revolutionsed the breeding world.
Supposing you had a great stud, couldn`t you keep
producing pups from him long after he was gone?
Or does the cost of the storage and subsequent AI make
it unfeasible at the present?

as far as i am aware you cant use AI if the dog is alive in this country registered at the KC and once it is dead you cant use the stored semen for 10 years after death to stop a dog having to much influence on the gene pool.
AI can be used if the dog is registered in another country but i am not sure about time after the dog has passed away

I had a guide dog stud and he was retired from active service at 7 (we lost him at 13) his sperm was frozen and it was certainly used while he was still alive as they wanted to carry on his line but I've no idea how long it was used for.

Shhhhh Jane That won't be public knowledge
Its a big no no except under strict certain guidelines. Whether we agree with it being such a no no or not is dependant on your point of view but generally speaking the rules are there for a good reason. Its not like we live in the States where the best dog for your bitch could be 2000 miles away or anything. And pet passports are pretty straightforward to obtain if *he* is on the continent.
It could be those Guide dog litters were not registered with the KC, perfectly acceptable practice for one of the service organisations. Or they may have fought for a special dispensation. But I would think they were just not registered to be honest. Not all service litters are.
Storage of good stud dogs sperm is getting more and more common, yes, for future use in years to come.
