Microchipping versus Tatooing

Phew that must of been a horrible few hours......

Sometimes the dogs are not scanned though this is part of the problem.

Even with 20 chips in them if a scanner isn't available or not used, for whatever reason, they will be classed as strays and fall into the 7 day programme...sad but true Sad

Am so glad you had a good experience though.

The 7 day window was what I was referring to regarding tattooing. I think that, because a dog is considered 'property' and by tattooing you are 'marking' that property, the window is increased to 28 days which is the standard time marked property has to be kept. It would be interesting to hear from anyone who might know the law in this case.

Thanks for that, I will try and find the legal standing on this...but if correct clearly offers much more time to be able to trace owners. Although by having the tattoo already done this should be automatic anyway.

I think it may be right as I think I am right in saying a chip is not proof of ownership so by ' marking ' you are determining ownership?! Maybe?

Can I ask whats involved with tatooing - Sorry I've never looked into this so:

1 Is it like us getting tatooed? Not that I've had any I'm a wimp and wouldn't think Winston and Oscar would take too kindly to someone stabbing at their ears?

2 What's to say whoever gets your dog is going to take notice of a tatoo, if they rarely check microchips and if the law means you get 28 days, Would you in reality if the rehoming (pts) kennels don't know this?

It's really sad to read Penny's story. You assume you are doing the right thing in having your babies chipped, but then you read something like this and realise that something else may be needed.

I'm still pleased that we got Smudge chipped but the tattoo option is definitely a viable one too. I will be asking the vet to check Smudge's chip when he goes for his booster.

Good to know that we have other options now - has tattooing been around long?

It is not like us being tatooed no...the ID number is on what looks like hair straightners and clamp just the once on the ear.

Chipping requires a scanner to read the chip, not always possible ( as bizarre as that sounds)
Tattooing requires nothing more than a pair of eyes. A thief wouldn't be interested in a tattooed dog as they can't sell it on. Statistics prove all the time if a tattooed dog is stolen it is quickly dumped.
Chipping is still very important and I am not knocking it at all but was originally designed to return a lost dog. Dog lost, found, scanned, returned. It was never designed to help with stolen dogs. So any break in the chain of events means the system fails.

Tattooing has been the norm in Europe for 40 years, and was / is their only means of identifying a dog. They are only now going to chipping aswell and that is solely due to the pet passport scheme

Should anyone decide to go this route these are the only people to use.

Tis vital that all data is kept on one database and their tatooists are all fully trained and registered.

One of current probs with chipping is that different company chips and scanners are not compatable...with each other sometimes, so chip can't be read.....by only using the National Tattoo register we keep it all under one roof and we can't have same problem....

Over 1000 dogs have been returned by tattoos alone....and it is still considered a new thing ( although used by greyhounds and GSD for decades )

as for the age you get them chipped at my pups where chipped at 4 months and I am so glad that they have been chipped now especially with all the thefts you hear about

I never go away from home without making sure that the runs are all locked up and secure as well as the kennels...my neighbours are notified that I am going out for a short time and just to keep an eye out for anyone in my yard...besides solo would make an unholy row if a stranger was to go need her babies
