Thank you all for your replies, I know that I must be strong with my recall tranining.
Bean is brilliant of the lead he very rarely leaves my side apart from a little sniff ahead, However yestersay has soon as he shaw that water he legged it. I will start my recall training this evening, I dont ever want to be put in that scary situation again.
Keep at it Sarah. Sometimes you start to think they will never learn but then it drops into place and they are a joy to be with. Consistency is the clue. Remember what I said, If you are not in a position to be able to enforce the command if needed they it MAY be better not to give it. The more it's obeyed and the less it's ignored then the more it becomes an immutable law in your dogs mind.
I have a friend called Sarah and she's known as Bean by everyone!
Anyway, what a horrible experience for you - I dread that happening. Like your Bean Dan is obsessed with water and I have to think now where to walk him where I know there is no river or pond - just a small flowing stream for him to go in. Yesterday I had to take him somewhere different at lunchtime as where we normally go has some roadworks nearby. I had no idea there was a river there and its low now. We came into this field and he just made a beeline for the river and before i could shout he dived in! I was horror struck as I could see the sides were very steep. However, unlike you and Bean, he did manage to scramble back up at the second attempt after a lot of scrabbling about and luckily, at 9 months, he is quite strong now, but I was trying to work out how I would get down there and back up! I felt a bit shaky afterwards so goodness knows how you felt!
He does understand now if I say NO at him loudly as he approaches the water and he will back off - but I just didn't see the river yesterday in time. I find having Dan on a lead walking to heel really hard work - I have to really nag at him - and the annoying thing is he does know what I mean. Off the lead if I tell him to walk to heel he's fine and very good.
Always have your mobile phone with you on a walk!

She could have wiped my feet first
I remember when Anna was a puppy she was not a strong swimmer. In a working test I had a retrieve way out on a lake. A friend was judging. As Anna dot further and further from the bank her head was getting higher and higher. I said to the judge, "Never mine, the bright side is, if she drowns I'll save on food bills!" I must admit, I was getting near to doing a strip and swimming out to rescue her but she got to the dummy and the extra weight at the front brought her head down and she swam back without more ado!
Be careful, Labradors are natural swimmers but Labrador puppies are not always good swimmers until they have plenty of experience.
