This one's for Kay really

On the thread about oily fish you advised Vitamin E to go with the sardines (which I got for her this morning incidentally so a tin tonight I think).

Will try to get the Vit E tomorrow. Will I get the natural stuff in Boots do you think? What is 'iu'? Is it because I'm proposing to give her fish once or twice a week that she needs the Vitamin E or do labs need it in general? What are it's benefits?

Sorry lots of questions I know it's just I'd really like to understand the reasoning behind it.

Thanks
Trina

Hi Trina, Vitamin E is usually good for hormonal balance and skin/hair. But if you feed Omega 3s you should also supplement with Vitamin E between 200 and 400 iu per day as they have a synergistic effect. (It increases the effect of the Omega 3)

Vitamins A, C, E are valuable anti oxidants and as such are a good idea for human and canine health and can be given in general, not just as a synergetic additive.

Oils should be cold pressed and in dark bottles or capsules and not exposed to light.

Either pearce the capsule and squirt onto food or feed whole, depends on the dog, some just simply dont like the gelatine capsule. If a dog is allergic to beef, then use oil only, they will also be allergic to the gellatine capsule.

Sorry, 'iu', is is simply an abbreviation of international units. Units are terms which pure, or impure vitamin material can be assayed

Vitamin E = 200iu = 135mg
400iu = 270mg
1000iu = 671mg

Whichever brand you purchase will have the capsule weight listed in contents, so if 200iu, feed 2 per day, ....400iu feed 1 per day and so on

Any good manufacturers will do, Boots, Holland and barret etc. Just check the labels and make sure it is natural, ie D as opposed to DL
Hope this helps Smile

I use www.Healthspan.co.uk for vitamins and fish oil. Not only is the quality and price very good but also all their capsules are gelatine free
