A very good read as usual Di, you just forgot the bits about -
Bruised knees
Aching back - permanent hump !!
Bruised / cuts legs (when bitches clamp on)
Banged Heads
other medical conditions inflicted...... Very Happy

Have to say to add to the assisted thing it really does help the dog and bitch from hurting themselves and / or each other and is in their best interests. Also Helen I hear what you say but if we ruled out unready bitches or dogs / bitches that require assistance in some way we would be seriously reducing the gene pool too.

As we any breeding the best thing you can do is go and watch / help some one with experience first or go to an expereinced stud if you are a first timer. It can be difficult and traumatic even but at least you will be FULLY prepared and ready to deal with things.

Jo

Having read Di's very informative post about the realities/dangers(!) of putting your dog at stud, I've had various images going around my mind, like you do Laughing

The Ramblings of a Stud Dog

I am a working Labrador
A handsome fella at that
I have an important role to play
In getting the ladies fat

For I am a Labrador stud dog
A job not to take too light
I’ve had my tests, from eyes to hips
So father some puppies I might

The lady, she gives me the eye
I wander over and say:
‘Hello pretty lady, fancy a drink?’
And she rolls her eyes my way

Another time she can’t wait to see me
Wagging tail so fast
But as soon as I approach the rear
She’s giving up the lust

Her eyes turn red, the evil stare
I’ve over-stepped the mark
If I inch just a little too close
She’ll give out a nasty bark!

For my next effort I don a suit
Made from metal armour… but wait!
This lady just isn’t that nice
She was having ME on a plate

I give a sigh, I muse and grin
Just get on with the task in hand
Try to get it over quick
Let it go smoothly just as planned.

The armour suit worked a treat
I left her most perplexed
When my next lady comes along
I’ll be wearing it for safe sex!

This article was great Di - many thanks for writing it and for all of the advice over the phone.

Sad as it seems Charlie has "had" his second wife this week. We are extremely proud as we did it all on our own and had two 20 minute ties on Day 14 & 15. The information you have supplied Di has been invaluable and helped to make sure things went smoothly!!

Fingers crossed now for some lovely puppies!!!

Soooo glad I read your post, thank you, what an eye opener Exclamation

Our boy Max has just had his 1st birthday and he is a wonderful, happy and gentle chap, with, like loads here, a great pedigree, a long line of champion gun dogs. Me, like a twit, have been thinking of the wonderful puppies he could produce when a little older and how other people could enjoy what we have.

I was unsure if it was something we "should" do, maybe just once for him, but, I am definitely having second thoughts. Max enjoys "play" with his friends but hate's aggression, he just walks away unhappy, so feisty females are not for him. Plus there is no way I would want to see him hurt in any way, he gets upset when Sheba (his cat) gets cross and she has never even used a claw, just grumbles at him especially when he wants to wash her and she is asleep Exclamation
