I was at training last night, and my trainer kept saying she needs a half check collar (she had her usual leather one on). I know they sell them at the club, and can't help thinking that he's trying to sell me one.

Are half check collars good for training?

At our training class dogs only allowed to wear flat collars. Unless they need something else which they then speak to trainer about. , Maggie has a half check as she sometimes gets spooked and will slip collar and when i first got her she snapped one Rolling Eyes Confused So to be on the safe side if she's going out on her own(without Baxter) or with anyone apart from me she has it on .She doesn't need it for lead walking but only as i said for safety Wink

I'm no expert but I wouldn't think that Jayda needs a half check! If she does pull alot on her lead during training or walking when out with you, then I would suggest stopping and walking her the opposite way for a few steps. Start again with walking the way you want to go and and try get her to walk just behind your knee level and tell her to "heel". If she pulls again, repeat the above. If she does walk to "heel" obviously praise her.

You need to repeat this every time she pulls, it can be rather tedious but it does teach them (in my experience anyway). I don't believe that she needs a half-check collar, this will just go tight around her neck whenever she pulls and won't really show her anything.

I use a half check collar whilst I am training Henry, and also whilst I was training Bonnie.

If you use them correctly they are great for training. TBH the collar never went tight on their necks if they went wrong, as they were loose. It was the sound of the chain that corrected my two.

I think it really depends on the dog, as I have never used them on Annie or Charlie as they have never needed it. Is Jayda a very strong dog ? If not, then I would probably suggest not using one.

Can you borrow one to try it, before you buy one ? The trainer should not usually try to get you to buy things just for them to make money. Do you trust your trainer ? I know at my old club, they use to sell everything from collars to dumbells etc, but never tried to sell them to us, they were on display if we did, but no hard sell.

We've always used flat collars to train our girls (gosh I keep thinking people will think I'm referring to my 'children' when I say 'girls' but I don't have any kids, honest!) and I have only recently invested in two rather luscious chocolate slip leads to match our girlies when we take them out and want them to look posh. Other than that the only other collar we have is a wide leather collar for each of them for manwork. I think Tammy's suggestion of borrowing a collar is a goodidea , I (personally) wouldn't just buy one without good reason.

I used a half-check on Alfie and have since go them for Daisy and Leo too - I find them great, as long as they are used properly.
