If Daisy's mating was successful she should be on day16 now. What signs of pregnancy are there to look for and what type of test would people recommend? Im a bit dubious about the vet doing an abdominal examination in case he damages the puppies at the crucial stage of development. Is the relaxin blood test readily available??

Hi Toni, I've actually no idea and can't give you an answer, but have always referred back to the breeder we got our girls from with any reference to breeding or anything for that matter. She's helped me no end and given me advice from feeding to hip & elbow scores, eye tests etc, along with useful book titles. It might be one of the best places to start asking?

Don't be inpatient, you'll know in plenty of time.

Hi Toni,

I am in the same boat as you. Hazel was mated 15 days ago - puppies hopefully due within 2 days of yours!

I do not expect to see any 'signs' for another week to a fortnight at the very least! I personally do not like the vet to 'palpitate' to check for pups. I know it is hard, but either she is or isnt. Try to wait a bit longer Wink

I would expect the milk bar to start to change in the next 8-12 days. The nipples go like little 'bullets' and they start to get rings around them at the base. Her vulva should also have not gone back to its pre season state if she is in whelp.

Good luck - if our girls are in whelp, between us we should have lots of yummy puppy photos to put on here in 7 weeks time.

Trace x

If Dora's in whelp she is on day 32. I'm sure she's pregnant as she is so much quieter and thoughtful. Puts her paws up at every opportunity. Her milk bar is more pronounced, though her tummy has shown no changes as yet. Fingers crossed.

As the others have said, teats standing to attention and looking pinker, hair starting to fall out around them and vulva looking puffy.

Molly showed all of the above by week 3/4 but pregnancy was finally confirmed by a scan at 5 weeks.

Good luck!!

I wrote this a few weeks ago - being lazy

----------------------
There are very few early signs other than maybe a tiny bit of sickness in the early morning for *some* (but by no means all) bitches...

Is she a first timer? By eye generally I am not convinced my girls are in whelp until at least their 5th week, usually their 6th.

Three things to watch for. Her being a little more 'mummified and affectionate'. Secondly her vulva that would have swolen during her season usually will remain puffy and more swollen than usual. By about week 4 usually her nipples will have dropped like little bullets, however this is not a reliable sign because the hormone rush of a phantom pregnancy OR just generally her hormones sorting themselves out after her season can also cause this to happen.

I am now convinced Dora is pregnant. Showing all sign as listed by Diana.
She also looks "fuller" in her tummy which I didn't think would show yet.
Shocked Shocked Shocked .
Dora is in her fifth week. She could of course be having a phantom!!
I went to vets to day to get clear in my own mind about out of hours calls, I will phone them when she starts to whelp. I also asked if they carried as standard, calcium/glucose for eclampsia, which they do, as I read somewhere that someone had to drive 50 miles to get some. None of which hopefully we'll need, but will save panic at a difficult time.
My vets couldn't be more helpful. Answered all my questions, patiently and offered extra advice.

Getting really excited now.

Jane
