Help - Buster has his KC Bronze test this Thursday and I am having real trouble with him jumping up people when they come into our house or when we are at dog training. I have tried taking him outside down to our local shops and he doesn't try to jump up anyone there so our trainer thinks that he must do it at home as he sees it as his territory and he is used to the surroundings at training.
Hi,
Can you give him an alternative command that he can't do whilst jumping, like 'sit' or 'down'. Be very firm about it but reward like crazy when he gets it right. Try to get friends and family to come to the house as much as possible between now and your test and keep them coming to the door, ignoring the dog completely whilst you put him in the position you want and rewarding. Get them to repeat it as many times as they are willing to do so it becomes pretty boring for Buster and the reward treat becomes a better reward than jumping up.
Its takes patience and time, but then so does anything worthwhile!
Best of luck with your test and let us know how he gets on - we like to celebrate successes here (and comiserate when necessary!)
Becs and the Gang
Unfortunately Buster didn't pass his test - everything was great but the only thing that let him down was having his eyes, ears, teeth etc checked. We hadn't practiced this as we didn't think there was an issue and my other half usually does that side of it and when we came to do it in the test he just kept rolling round the floor thinking it was playtime. So we have to resit the exam in 3 weeks time.
Any tips?
Jess is taking her Bronze this Tuesday so I can sympathise Jess is also a manic jumper but I don't think this matters too much on the Bronze (having done the silver and gold with Ollie and I don't think being 'calm' when greeting someone is tested until the silver)
Anyways if he does jump up (during the test or at any other time) just literally turn your back on him and ignore it. If you say 'no' or 'off' or push him away or take any notice of it he'll see that as getting attention for the behaviour so as hard as it is you have to ignore it and get everyone else to do the same. With Jess she's started to learn that if she jumps she gets no attention whatsover so there's no point in doing it!
Re: the vet check just keep practising it with him at home. Don't overwhelm him at first but just check his teeth and treat him, then progress to paws, eyes, ears etc. Also try getting other family members/friends/ the trainer etc to vet check him too so he gets used to it.
Good luck and I'll let you know how Jess does on Tuesday
I`m sorry Buster didn`t pass this time, i`m sure he will next tho, I`d practice inspecting his mouth, ears and eyes using the same method as for the jumpimg up, treat him when he allows you or someone else to do it without rolling thinking its a game.
