No, nothing to do with Liverpool!
I have been looking at the predigree of Rolo, who went to the Bridge last year. On his Sires side he has dogs from the Affix Follytower, Annakay and Nunneyswood, and these dogs are described as 'Liver'. Can anyone tell me what this means, I thought you got yellow, black and chocolate in labs. Is it a reference to nose colour etc ? Rolo was deep chocolate with a brown nose.
From what I`ve learned Chocolates used to be known as Liver before someone had the "bright idea" of calling them Chocs which of course made them more desirable and sadly led to them being bred with no thought for the health of the parents (hip scores etc) or the resulting siblings.
They can be registered as Liver or Chocolate which is why you have some on Rolo`s Pedigree
Thanks everyone, that has cleared that up.
When we first got Rolo as a rescue 8 years ago, I didn't know anything about screening of labs and the best breed lines. It has been interesting going back to the pedigree and seeing his relatives and tracing some of them back.
The data on the pedigree goes back to 1982 ....a quarter of a century. Now that has made me feel old, as I think the 80's were yesterday
The others are quite correct - labs come in three colours
Yellow - Black - Chocolate / Liver
Choc pups can be registered as either - and I know Kayc has registered her pups as Liver - from a commercial breeding viewpoint though - what would appeal to you most?
Liver Lab Puppies or Chocolate Lab Puppies
Wouldn't be surprised if the 'colour' itself has been responsible for a large amount of the indiscriminate breeding of chocolate lines
