I need some advice on how to get over a fear bailey has developed
A few weeks ago at training - bailey was set up for an A recall - i threw a treat for him and walked off... disaster struck and he was so excited he went skidding after his treat and banged right into the wall which just so happended to have a very large fire extinguisher attached to it - which then fell and landed on the poor lad.
NOW he wont go near the back wall of our training room, which is where we have to set the dogs up for stays - as as result he wont now stay even though he was doing them with me out the room - now he wont stay with me in the room.
He does stays at home and outside perfectullay so i know he can do them
Its also the way in and out, so leaving training is difficult aswell as the fact we have to use that door for a controlled walk through a door.
The moment he see's we are going in that direction he digs his claws into the ground and really dosent want to go.... my trainer has said to start doing his stays on the other side of the room, but surely he should be taught to get over this fear and not avoid it?
im not sure what to do... after doing so well getting where we are, its all gone wrong and i quite often feel like bursting into tears in class because he just wont stay like he used to... im starting to dread going.
I'd say take the trainers advice and completely avoid the situation. He'll soon forget what he was so scared of.
You know that park we went walking in when you came here for the bbq? Where the dogs went swimming? There is this platform thing (remember it?) Well, Pheebs refused to go in the water for a good 3 weeks because she had to walk past the platform. She absolutely cacked her pants at it! So I consulted someone here who's advice I trust and he said don't take her for a good month then just casually walk past and see what she does..........sure enough, after a month she was fine - hurling herself back in the water
Give the little angel a cuddle from me and a snog from Pheebs xx
I remember that platform lucy.... and i think although i would have thought different, it might be best to ignore... its just difficult as we have to go in and out but if i ignore it and get him to stay somewhere else - hopefully this will cure the problem!
Think I`d go with what Lucy says M, take the trainers advice and do the stay in another part of the room for a while, the more you try to force Bailey to do it in the usual place the more frightened he may become.
Hope he was ok after the fire extinguisher falling on him!!, must have hurt poor lad
Is there any more extinguishers in the hall at all?, if so try walking him past those to see how he reacts.
funny enough mary theirs another on on the other side of the same wall.... hmmm i guess ill try another part of the room tonight and see how that goes!
