I'm really really worried about my puppy when I go on holiday. Bailey is 8 months and this is our first holiday since we had him. I always feel guilty when I go to work, as I work full time. I feel bad that he doesn't get as much contact as he should. I did check with the breeder before I bought him and I pop home of a lunch time but I still feel guilty. I don't want to leave Bailey when we go away. I'm so anxious, I would really rather not go on holiday. Meant to be going for 2 weeks and my OH mom has offerred to watch Bailey. She will be off work for 1 1/2 weeks of my hols. I just feel like she hasn't been around Bailey that much and doesn't anticipate what he will do next. You have to be one step ahead of Bailey. He steals everything and obv isn't aware of the dangers of some things. We have puppy-proofed our house as much as poss and it has taken months for him to be settled in his routine. The prob is, I want OH mom to stay at our house for the 2 weeks with her OH. They havn't got any pets and are only 2 miles down the road so I didn't think it would be a prob. However they don't want to stay at ours, they think he'll be fine at theirs. They don't realise the destruction he has caused over the last few months, skirting etc and is now behaving when left in the utility alone, at night etc. I am so so worried. I know how to handle Bailey but I feel that they don't. I don't want to spoil his routine.

It really upsets me to think about my holiday and I don't feel like I'll be able to enjoy my holiday of a lifetime. Do you think I'm being unreasonable? Any suggestions?

I know exactly how you feel, as I am just like this if we have to go away.

I use kennels if we are going somewhere the dogs cannot go, and they have always been fine. It is me who is the wreck. Rolling Eyes

Does Bailey have a crate that he could used to stop him devouring your in-laws' house? Would you be happier with kennels?

He does have a crate but he recently fell out with it and it has never looked the same. That's why we had to start leaving him loose in the utility (crate door open). I don't want to leave him in kennels. I do appreciate that the in-laws will have him but I really wish they'd stay at ours. Just things like his bed time and walks. They wouldn't get a good night's sleep if he was in a diff environment, their house. Then they'd prob end up sleeping on the sofa, which he'd expect us to do when we get home. And they've never walked him so if they try and do this in a diff environment they've got no chance. He's over excited with me if we go somewhere different.

It's such a headache. Have to convince the OH that America is not so good and dog friendly hols in England are great! Thanks for the response xx

I used to borrow people's dogs whenever they went on holiday before we were in a position to get Luna. They lived by our rules in our home and because we tired them out walking and playing and they were a novelty to us so got 90% of our attention they never caused destruction. We probably broke all the rules they normally had (we lived in first floor flat at the time and none of the dogs were allowed upstairs in their own houses - they had to break that rule on entry!!!!) but we got along swimmingly.

Maybe Bailey could stay over for one night or weekend before your holiday to allow your Mum to know what she's let herself in for and you to gain confidence that he'll be ok. The novelty of a different place may change his behaviour.

You deserve a holiday!!

If you're not keen on the idea of kennels, have you thought about a pet sitter type person who can take your dog for the whole of the holiday? I completely understand your anxiousness at leaving Bailey with an inexperienced dog/puppy person and perhaps someone who has more experience would put your mind at ease.

Have you shown your MIL the damage around your own house? Surely she will realise that it's not that easy to look after a puppy.

Perhaps if you have time to find a pet sitter before your holiday they could get to know you and Bailey and then you'd feel more at ease during your holiday.

I wouldn't be able to leave Hudson with someone who didn't understand him or know his quirks. But I'm probably unlikely to go away without him for anything longer than a night and I've been fortunate enough to find a reliable lady who has him on occasion for me plus his breeder is only up the road.

I was going to suggest the same - it would either reassure you that your OH's mum will cope just fine, or make you/her realise that it's not going to work and you need to make alternative arrangements, but either way, you'd know before you went off for two weeks.

It's great that she has offered to have him and hopefully if she's off work for most of the time you're away, the potential for him to be destructive will be greatly reduced?

If you try a night or two beforehand and she can't cope, the suggestion to find a pet sitter is a good one.

I used to look after friends dogs while they were away, in return for them looking after mine and this worked fine for a number of years. Now it isn't so easy, as friends have moved away or not got dogs of their own anymore and the one non doggy person (my MIL) who used to occasionally have them, is a little too frail now (she'd be ok with Pood though).

I think Luna-tic's idea of letting your MIL have a trial run is an excellent idea, as then she can see what she is letting herself in for.

I won't kennel my dogs, so I'm with Angela, in that where I go, the dogs come too Very Happy. I do have the odd hankering for a holiday somewhere warm but it doesn't last, as I don't like flying much either Laughing .

Thanks for the responses. Bailey has stayed at MIL house during the day before, when we've been on a day trip, think it's more the night time and trying to keep the same routine. Think she understands my concerns a bit and will when she comes back from her holiday and sees the chunk of plaster missing from my wall!

Think I'll have to compromise. I think she'll stay here of a night and go to hers in the day time to sort the OH dinner. Just hope that Bailey behaves and it doesn't upturn his routine too much. Rolling Eyes

I do go abroad, and I use kennels for Roxy and next year Jenson will be joining her in kennels. The only reason Brooke doesn't go in kennels is because I have someone I trust who absolutely loves having her, and I am returning the favour.

Kennels give me peace of mind tbh, I worry more about Brooke and what she may get up to than I do about Roxy.

I like our kennels, I can call anytime to hear how they are doing, they have a huge outside run and Roxy loves to flirt at the dogs in the next run. They are safe, fed and have a warm bed.

Good luck with your decision x
