i think i`ve put this in the right place!
anyway, yesterday i took bonny to my dads, his garden`s fully fenced 6ft and has a good gate on it. anyway, bonny was in the garden and went all quiet. when i looked out there was a german shepherd in the garden, bonny and the gs were just sniffing eachothers heads. we dont know how he got in the garden, but i had to go get his owner. she said that he must`ve climbed on the table in her garden and gotten over.
i dont think they mated, well, i hope not, but i just need some advice.
the woman said her gs isnt 2 years old yet so cant mate as they cant do it till they`re 2, is this true?
bonny isnt on heat, could she still have mated or does it only happen when she`s in season?
the woman was more concerned that her gs would have spoilt his pedigree if he`s mated with bonny.
what are the signs to watch out for? would he have jumped over just to mate with bonny or would he still have jumped over to be friendly with her?
i was actually shocked that bony hadnt barked at him, does this point to anything?
i`m going nuts as i dont want bonny to have any pups and cant wait till she`s been spayed. the woman did say to me that bonny could already be pregnant-it`s not offen you get a lab as cheap as bonny was!
any advice would be very gratefull! bonny wont be going my dads again untill she`s been spayed that`s for sure!

The GS Can mate even tho he is not 2 as far as I am aware..

If you are worried take bonny to the vets they can give an injection to stop the pregnancy as long as its not too far gone i think...

Hi Lickalab, A GS can produce progeny at around 7months of age, as can most breeds. Unfortuately this includes bitches having their 1 season.

When was Bonnie's last season?
Could she have been is season and you have not noticed, (called a dry season)

Remember, the season is not just the period where the bitch is showing blood, it can be a full 28days, including before and after any blood show. Most bitches ovulate around the 10/14 day mark, but some, like my own, can ovulate on day 2 up to day 26

If she is close to a season or possibly having a dry season, your 1st port of call should be the vets. Bonnie can have what is called 'the morning after injection' IF there is a possibility that she may be pregnant.

let us know how you get on.

Why on earth would it spoil a pedigree or am I being completey daft the pups cant be registered how selfish!!

I do hope poor Bonny is okay- I know what you mean re worrying and needing to get her spayed I couldnt wait for Willows op to get done due to her hip scores!! Luckily our entire male could go on his holibobs and I 'm not completely sure he actually knows what to do I have never seen him get 'excited' ever with other dogs or bitches!!

thanks for the advice.
i dont know when bonnys last seson was, the people i bought her off said they couldnt remember when it was. when i took bonny to the vets a week ago, just over, they said she`s showing no signs of having a season yet, but could she be having a dry one or are the signs the same? i am actually woundering too if bonny had mated before coming to me-that`s why they said they dont remember when her last season was? but would the vet be able to tell if she was early in pregnancy?
yes, i think i`ll call the vets when they open and talk about it. thanks.

It might sound silly to you Suzanne, but years ago people really did believe that to mate with a dog of a differing breed would "Pollute" the bitch for all time and that from then on any puppies born from subsequent litters would be cross breeds! Complete rubbish of course, but that was the thinking when I was a boy! My guess is that the GSD owner is possibly either elderly of was told it by an elderly person.

Regards, John

kayc,
hi, i got bonny 13 days ago, can`t remember the date! brains not in action today!
she`s doing brill really, she`s actually just realised what `sit` means! i`ve got some more picies of her on my phone that i`ll put on here soon.
johnw, the gsd owner is in her 40s but she`s not `all there`! to put it nicely! i think this is the 3rd gsd she`s had in about 8-10 years but she`s never had them for long, this is the 1st one she`s had with papers.
by the way, does anyone know if feeding bonny heart ad liver/kidneys would be ok as a once a month treat and if so, would it be ok mixed with rice-if so, is it white or brown rice?
