I think and know that there are too many people that wont even think about feeding dogs raw meaty way its a taboo subject. If only they knew the good it does for the dogs. After all it was what mother nature intended them to eat.Trying to convince them is like getting blood out of a stone.....Event some vets dont beleive in it .......it would mean that they would lose money...
I havent seen my dogs look so happy about a meal for some time. What did bother me at first was..... with all the constant changes in meat would they come down with constant stomach upsets, but I needn't have worried.
I plan to order Switching to Raw by Sue Johnson on payday () and on the website it gives a discount for 5 or more copies as well as a discount on postage - so does anyone else want to pile in so it's cheaper? Let me know by Weds
I am finally taking the full plunge now Pheebs has been diagnosed with cystitis and vaginitis even though my vet thinks I'm a fruit loop.
Why buy a book on it Lucy when there`s oodles of info on here on raw feeding?!!! , there`s even a day to day menu that Kay posted for Carroll, I did have the link but I`ve mislaid it
Course you can join the club, the more the merrier
I would like to feed Alfie raw at some point but i know it sounds selfish when afterall it's his health that would benefit but isn't it messy feeding raw? do you feed them in the house? i just have visions of having blood and boney bits getting on the carpet another problem would be insuring you can get the food and have enough room to store it all
maybe i'll have to look into it
Poor little pheebs, i hope she gets better really quick
Am I thick or what!!, the menu Kay did is on the first page of this thread !.
Have you given Pheebs chicken wings in the past?, can`t remember whether you were on of the ones who gave it a try, if so your already on your way to raw feeding
Also in this thread is a book Carroll is getting (recommended by Kay)
Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats: The Ultimate Diet
With the hearts I get Ox`s from a butcher in a market between £2.99 and £3.99 the more expensive ones are HUGE!, spose they would be when you look at the size of an Ox , I cut them up and then freeze them.
You do need a reasonable amount of freezer space, I bought another small one to cope with Cindy and CJ`s stocks
Yep Pheebs has had raw ciccy wingies She has them about 2 or 3 times a week.
Ok my worries are as follows (sorry if they seem selfish)
*mess
*organisation of what and when
*buying an extra freezer
*supply of meat etc
*supplementation
*cost
Any answers for these?
To be honest I have no idea where to begin, what to buy, how to prepare the meat/bones/tripe/offal (I have no idea what some of these words mean ) That's why I need a book - an idiots guide
Mess, some feed in the yard/area of garden, my yard isn`t fit for this so CJ&C eat in their crates and I clean it afterwards, no mess left believe me!!, with a raw diet it ALL goes, lots of licking done afterwards just to be sure (by the dog not you )

organisation of what and when
Presumably you mean when and what to feed?, Kay`s menu will give you a good guise to that.

buying an extra freezer
I got an extra one, just small(ish), and have enough in it to last them prob for a week or so, some i know have a lot more than that, but you do what you have the room for.

supply of meat etc
I get most of mine from the supermarkets, will hopefully find a cheaper outlet soon though, I get chickens (whole and then cut into portions myself), lamb shanks (C&CJ`s favourites), turkey legs, chicken wings, anything thats reasonably priced, is worth a look in their "almost out of date" chillers, you can get some bargains there, as you are going to freeze the meat once home.
I also go to the market and get pigs trotters and Ox hearts as I`ve already mentioned.

supplementation
I`ve never supplemented, had read conflicting reports on whether or not its needed, (they`ve always seemed perfectly healthy ) but will be starting them on the live yogurt that Kay recommends.

costs
These can vary a little depending what you get and how much at a time, I`ve found that they don`t seem to need as much RMB`s as they do of bicuit type meal, think the feeding is around 3% of the dogs body weight per day, with a little more for pups, (Hopefully Kay will be along and can confirm or otherwise, maybe PM her (sorry Kay!) )

The only word I think that may be a little misleading is Offal, this is the things like heart, liver kidneys etc, muscle meat I think its known as as well.
If you buy wings, tighs etc there`s no need for preparation other than defrosting before feeding, if you buy a whole chicken, tou`d need to cut it into portions, I sometimes remove the breast meat for myself, this is ok as the bird was meant for human consumption any
Hope this helps you a bit Lucy, any more don`t hestitate ok?
Majic licks the floor the bowl the patio the grass wherever she has dragged her delicacy off too so don't worry about mess.
Honestly getting going is not too bad, I was given by a friend a huge cehest freezer which is now in my shed just ordered from Landywoods in 18lb cases so storage esential if you are going to order from them.
My kitchen did look a litle like an abbatoir on Friday after sorting everything but it was only for an hour and that was for 4 weeks food so really not much mess involved at all.
Suuplements I have just got from H&B and got one wrong ahich I need to take back but not that expensive if you get the big bottles of stuff.
Initial outlay can be pricey but this works out cheaper as weeks go on as you do not need everything every week.
