Maggie has just had her first raw chicken wing.

After she had stalked it, licked it, flung it around and barked at it, she finally realised that she could eat it. It took her ages, she was eating it on the lawn with me inside looking through the window, as it was pretty gross, crunching bones and all that!! Anyway she absolutely loved it so I will see if it affects her in any way and then make it a regular thing.

If I was to replace one of her meals with chicken wings, how many should I give her? She's 18 weeks tomorrow. Also, I saw some humungous turkey drumsticks in Tesco - is she too young for one of those? I would imagine it would last her all day!!

Regards Di x x

LOL at the flinging it around Very Happy , can bet she won`t do that next time she has one!, I usually give Cindy a couple of chicjen wings when she has them, but of course she`s a lot smaller being a Westie, CJ will eat 4, he`s adult now though, so I`d say a couple to begin with for Maggie.

CJ has those Turkey drumsticks, loves them!, one is more than enough, you`d prob find it`d last Maggie a couple of meals at her age, or if she eats the whole thing then don`t give her another meal, I`d be inclined to wait a while though til she`s a bit older, has she got her adult teeth yet?, they really need those for the bone on a turkey leg.

You can though give her chicken drumsticks and thighs, the bones are softer on the chicken ones.

I`m sure others will be along to tell you what they do as well Very Happy

I remember when Corbie had his first chicken wing, and he still does this now when he has them - he will not put his paws on it to help himself tear it Laughing His face is always a picture as he goes to put his paw on it and then think 'urgh, I'm not touching that!' lol He still eats it all though Laughing

Hi Mary,

Talk about coincidence, I was just telling my friend on the phone about Maggs having chicken wings and she was wondering whether her Westie Robbie would be ok with them. Then lo and behold you mention Cindy, so I guess that answers her question !!!!

Maggie is still teething so I take your point about the turkey bones, they are pretty big so I will definitely wait until she's older.

Yes your friends Robbie will be fine with chicken wings, Cindy did`nt start on RMB`s still she was around 7 yo, took to it straight away, your friend may need to hang on to one end of it til Robbie gets the idea that it has to be chewed/crunched before swallowing Very Happy

Oh , i thought chicken bones were the only bones dogs weren't allowed as they can choke on small bones?I would be paranoid checking Marley hadn't got one stuck!

Ali, they are fine as long as they are RAW. As I understand it, once chicken bones are cooked they become brittle and can splinter.

BTW my hubbie was horrified when he came home tonight and I told him she had eaten raw meat!!

Love Di and Maggs x x
