Hi

I feed Abbey on Burns and she has 125g in the morning and 125g at tea time.

Should i feed her more in the morning than at night ie. 150g and 100g ?

Just somebody said to me that they should have their biggest meal at breakfast and smallest in the evening.

I just wondered what every one else does Rolling Eyes

Ack really? I feed Wendy 3 times a day because she a pup, but I give bigger breakfast and dinner (equal parts) and a smaller lunch. Maybe should be giving smaller dinner then!

The reasoning behind giving a smaller meal in the evening is because a bit like us they may tend to put weight on as not burning the calories off in the evening ?

But i dont know if this is true in the case of dogs ?

Hope someone can shed some light !

Gosh I am feeding Tilly even less, she gets 70g 3 x a day....I was feeding her 70g 4 x day but the vet told me to cut out one feed as she was overweight....I hope I am not starving her...... Embarassed

I'd never thought about the calorie burning thing!

I have been wondering the same. I feed Kyra even amounts, 150gr in the morning and 150gr in the evening. She is 6 and 1/2 months. She get fat free treats throughout the day. She burns a lot and she has been perfect in weight so far. I think I might start giving her 160gr in the morning and 140gr in the evening...

LOL Vicky!

Don't worry girls, you are doing right, Kyra was on 3 meals a day until a couple of weeks ago. Every dog is different, as long as they steadily put on weight at the rate of about 1kg per week and you can feel the ribs but no see them, your dog is perfect! They are all different, just like humans, some burn more, some less, it depends on how much movement they do, etc...

It is puzzling in the beginning while we learn about our little ones, but it gets easier on all fronts!

Oh Tracey, I love your new sig picture!

Have a good day everyone!

xxx

I always feed more in the evening.
Reason for this, is pritty much the same as humans. In the evening you are relaxing more, which means your food has much easier time of digesting and settling.
During the day and afternoon, this is usually when most people walk their dog and are doing most activies. Personally i think during the day its better to have less on your stomach than to much.
I don't weight out Leos food, i just go by his current state. His waste and the rib test.
If that day he's getting less exercise, i feed him less food. If that day i know he'll be doing a lot of exercise and having a larger walk, i feed him more.
A human would never go hiking up a mountain on a bowl of cornflakes (lol), they would increase their food that day according to what they needed. Same with dogs.
I feed Leo his evening meal anytime between 4pm-6pm. Depeing on what i'm doing that day etc.
Hope this helps, Jill xx

We do the same Julia, Bailey has a larger breakfast & dinner and a smaller lunch, then when the time comes, his lunch will be cut out and his breakfast & dinner portions will be increased accordingly.
