Hello, l am a new labrador owner and am in the need of some advice. Exclamation

I have an 8 week old labrador that has only been with us for three days. He has a tendency to make a lot of smells (wind), has slightly loose stools and bad breath. I have been told that he is on the right food this should be elevated, what dry food is the best?

Also, what are the best products to be used on the dog and in the house to remove any 'doggie' smells.

I really appreciate any help with this. Smile

Hi Lisa
Welcome to the forums.

Generally speaking, excess wind, loose stools and bad breath would indicate to me that his food does not suit him.... although youve only had him a very short time, and even a change in the water can upsets to their digestion. Is he on the same food that his breeder was giving him - if he has had a recent change this too can cause temporary problems if changed too quickly.

What food is he on? I feed Burns now, but I don't believe there is one feed that is the best and suit all dogs... some will thrive on a food that others don't do so well on.
regards
Jenny

He is still on the same food from the breeder (Iams), l am keen to change him from this, so l may have to do it sooner than later.

With wind and bad breath, I would tend to avoid foods which contain a lot of cereal, particularly maize, corn, wheat and sugar beet pulp. I don't know what the ingredients are in Iams, but I would guess it contains a fairly high percentage of cereal.

Hi and welcome Very Happy

We feed our new pup with Nutro (this is what the breeder had her on). She doesn't have any problems regarding poop or breath, so as the others said, it seems as though the food isn't suiting her.

I am a bit of a clean freak (as my previous posts will show!!) so I am keen to not have a house that smells really doggy! I just make sure that we clean her bedding regularly and the floors are always being cleaned. the windows are also always open to vent!

I also always wipe Tilly's paws each time she comes in from outside (and her body if she has been rolling in anything!), probably not good for her and I will probably be told off now for this by all the experienced lab owners! Embarassed Embarassed Confused Very Happy

I have Wendy on a Burns/NatureDiet mix and she doesn't have any bad smells Smile Can't tell you if it's because of the food though, as she'd never had bad smells to begin with.

Majic is on Burns but soon to be changed over to raw.

Never had bad breath and the only time I had loose stools in when we found she had an intollerance to chicken and was on Burns chicken and rice. Embarassed

Not saying your furbaby has an intollerance but the ingredients in the Iams could be too much for him or maybe he is been fed too much as this can cause loose stools also, did you get a diet sheet from the breeder at all?

I did get a diet sheet, but as he was the only pup of a litter l think that he has been spoiled. For breakfast he has one weetabix in milk. I think that this may be a contributing factor to his problems and may need to cut out of his diet. He is greedy and does have his food spilt over three meals a day. Wink

Thank you for all of your advice. Smile

Sometimes labs are lactose intollerant so it may be the milk that is causing the probs have you tried just giving the IAMS soaked to make a mush for each meal ie the daily quantity split into 3 meals and see how you go? Very Happy
