Do i set up my insurance for the day i bring Jorge home? Can i do that now or do I have to wait for that date? Do I sound completely stupid? Embarassed Wink

I use VetsMediCover.

Seems a good policy, the winner for me was the set total of £28 a month, irrespective of the type/age of dog.

Not had to make a claim so far. But here's hoping hey!

Laughing it's not easy is it!

we're with pets at home for lifetime extra cover, about £16 per month.

the type of cover i would buy is the one that will cover illnesses for the lifetime of the dog, so if, say, your dog is diagnosed with diabetes for example you will continue to receive payments for the duration of the illness ie life, subject to a maximum claim level.

you will pay an excess but that is typical of nearly all insurance policies.

pets at home offer a discount for microchipped dogs, although other companies may do the same. we found that we got a free months cover from pet plan when we registered with the vet and also one from KC when registering with them. we arranged our own cover after bringing Jazz home, she was microchipped when she got her 2nd vaccination, and all that tied in well because the 1st free month covered her up to that date.

hope this makes sense, sorry so long.

Most insurances wont kick in for the first 10 days of a policy so you may want to start the policy a couple of weeks before puppy comes home

There are two main types of insurance you can get annual cover and lifetime cover.
Annual cover will only cover your dog for that year. Say your dog breaks a leg you will be covered for that year but the next year and cant claim again if the same thing happens leaving you with the bill. Insurance companies then wont cover you for a broken leg because it will be classed as a pre existing condition.

Life time cover covers the dog throughout its life time. This is a good one to have as it covers you for the same condition each year as long as you keep the policy with them. Does that makes sense? Im not the best at wording things.

I think your breeder will have 2 weeks free insurance with the KC to activate when you take your pup home but i would check with them first i don't understand much about that one.
don't forget with most insurance policys there is a 2 week starting period where you cant claim for anything.

If it were me id put the start date 2 weeks before your pup comes home, that way you're covered from the day you bring the pup home. I think you can do this but if im wrong someone please correct me.

Both my boys have life time cover with John Lewis, both their cover is up to £7000. Again personally i would go for £7000 level of cover. Harrys is about £10 a month i've just put my first claim for him in.
Diesels is £30 a month however we have claimed about £7000 over 2 years on his and no doubt there will be more claims to follow as hes seeing a specialist this week.

I hope this helps you Very Happy

We've got the Lifetime Extra cover from Pets at Home too. Archie's cover is about £14.50 and Polly's is £16. You should be able to start the policy from the day you bring Jorge home. You can set it up before you get him (either on the phone or online). You get a discount once they are microchipped (just ring up and tell them the microchip number) and a discount if you take out additional policies on other pets. I think we also got a £20 PAH voucher for taking out each policy too.

Love the name Jorge and look forward to seeing lots of cute puppy pics once he's home. Very Happy

I am with Virgin - both the boys have whole of life cover for one payment of £38 per month

A cpl of people I rang wouldn't insure the pup before the age of 8 weeks - so IF you try and get it for the 2 weeks before you bring pup home, you *may* not be allowed as pup will be under 8 weeks.

Good luck with your pup! Smile

I have lifetime cover up to £7k (there's a £4k one too) with Pet Plan. It's £29/mth with a £75 excess. We couldn't get it until he was 8 weeks old so we had him before we got the insurance. However, we did have 4 weeks free insurance from the Kennel Club via the breeder.

We chose them on the recommendation of a vet friend and also because they can pay the vet direct rather than you paying the vet and then claiming it back from the insurance company which just seems a bit too much hassle to me.

Good luck!

Very Happy

I've used Help u Cover (Vets2pets) for the about the last 15 years.

Zaks is £45 per month with an excess of £70 Brodies is £32 with £80 excess and that covers them for £7000 per illness per year for life ie Zak has a thyriod problem that will need meds for the rest of his life so he is covered up to £7000 for that, each year, should he then get diabetis he will also be covered for £7000 for that, each year.
Just sent a claim in for Brodies elbow injury £1866 claim settled within 2 weeks, just have to pay the vet £80 now Sad

I would advise you to get the best possible cover you can within your budget then you shouldn't ever have to worry over a vets bill.
Good luck
