Ruby managed to gash the back of her leg whilst out for a walk this morning which has resulted in 10 staples and bandage from her paw up her leg. The wound was about 2 inches long and about 5 cm wide. The vet is hoping that the staples will be enough but she may have to be stitched if it doesn't heal.

Unfortunately it cut through an artery so you can imagine the mess on the snow Sad . I have no idea what caused it as we were out over the fields. The vet suspects a glass bottle or sharp metal object to cause the damage it did.

Anyway my question is how to keep the bandage dry ? We have already been out for a wee in the garden with a sainsburys bag tied around it and she managed to just make a hole through it, plus I had to hold it as we were walking. Anyone any bright ideas or am I being dim ?

Thanks

Chloe

Oh dear that must have been pretty traumatic for you! Hope Ruby's feeling OK now.

When Paddy cut his paw the vet gave us an IV drip bag (empty!) with the top cut off and some gauze strips to tie it onto the leg. It's stronger than a Sainsbury's type bag and quite durable. Not sure where you'd get one apart from the vets though.

Oh poor Ruby. Sending lots of healing vibes, bless her. I was going to say cling film or foil too.

Ooo Keeping bandaged legs dry can be a nightmare.

My Tara was always hurting her feet and lower legs, so I became a dab hand at rebandaging with a dry dressing if her's got soggy. I did invest in some dog shoes for her in the end. I used to use Clingfilm to cover as much of the bandaging as possible, then put the shoe on the top.

Healing vibes for Ruby's poorly leg XXXX

The gash was pretty amazing and it did make me feel a bit icky seeing how much blood was pouring out. She is not going to be able to do much over the next few days but with the amount of snow I need to protect it when she just goes outside for a wee.

Poor thing, she is feeling a bit sorry for herself and Bella is feeling sorry for her too, hence the photo in my other post Smile

Maybe I will try the cling film.

Chloe

Bratpack is right, the old drip bag is the best. Clingfilm just seems to make the wound sweaty. Phone your vet int the morning, they'll give you one.

I was impressed by the drip bag too. It was also easy to tie on.

Have to confess that I didn't realise that's what it was at first though. Embarassed

ooh drip bag, must remember that Idea

Poor Ruby, that sounds really sore Sad

In the past I have used a childs veruca sock, really durable and fits ince and snug over the hock - not sure if it'd be long enough for you though.
