Hi.Just saying hello.Brief history:bought up with a black lab and border collie. In my early 20's couldn't afford a lab, so me and hubby had a £10 border collie in 1996, our love of our life.2 kids later....then 2 years ago he died.I went to absolute pieces. Luckily for me ( This may sound awuful !!) but a few weeks later my husband had major surgery on his neck, which meant 6 months off work, which was a perfect time to integrate a puppy into the home.We had Luna Moon in October 2009.She is my world.
She is now 2.And we are mabe thinking of getting another dog. The only problem is we both work. My husband full time, I work 8.30-3.30 4 days a week. Luna is walked every morning with my husband before he goes to work, and is walked with me every evening( 4 nights a week I take her running with me)....she has the run of downstairs during the day. She was cage trained for the first 18months which worked well, but now her night time bed is the sofa!!!...I would love to adopt a rescue lab, but know they wouldn't consider us because of our working hours...and I dont think its fair to bring a puppy in for the same reasons...so dont dont really know how to go about it.Maby we shoudlnt get another dog.Any suggestions/opinions would be gratefully appreciated.
Hello, I'm sure there is a dog out there for you. If you visit the shelters and tell them exactly your situation one of them may have just the little pal for your family.
Some dogs are used to being left during the working day and the shelters will know which ones. The only thing I'd worry about is the fighting between your 2yr old dog and the new dog while new dog is settling in. Maybe you and hubby could have two weeks holiday each, staggered, so any new addition is supervised for the first month.

Hello Luna Moon from Luna-tic!!! (Tucker and me too!)
My Luna got a rescue little brother last July! Some rescues can be flexible with homing the right dog to the right home. I found some of the specific labrador breed rescues had blanket policies that seemed to discount me as soon as I read the first few points of their adoption procedure but there were other rescues out there who had dogs that could fit with the lifestyle I had to offer and were willing to consider the lifestyle if it fit the individual dog so do look into smaller local rescues that sometimes get labs in. Tucker came from Lizzie's Barn which isn't at all local to me but he was PERFECT for our Loony-bin and 6 months in we are all and
I work full time but have a petsitter, lunch time visits, early home times, long holidays, weekends full of dog related entertainments and FANTASTIC parents who adore having 2 black lab grand-kiddies to spend time with. My 2 are only left alone for up to 3/4 hours max and are often found sitting staring at me with tired gazes wondering when they will be left alone to snooze!! I can't trust Tucker to not get into mischief when left without human supervision (he gets up to it with human supervision too!) so he is crated while I'm out in the same room as Luna. They both seem happy with the set-up.
Could you or your husband arrange to go home at lunchtime? I think leaving one dog for 7+ hours is rather long, anyway, but you're right, a rescue is very unlikely to rehome a dog in that situation. Having a lunchtime visit home, or finding a dog walker/sitter to go in for an hour would make a difference though.
For example, lovely Frank has just become available for adoption and he could go to full-time workers, provided they make arrangements for a lunchtime visit/walk/break
