Hi everyone,I have a two year old black boy called Rufus and am looking to get another pup. I've been told to get a girl this time round by various people (breeders, friends etc) just wondered what every one else thought I've never had a bitch only dogs so have never had to deal with seasons etc (my boy is neutered) thanks for your help
Hello & welcome Another Rufus
Not sure if there's an ideal? I have a female lab & a male lab that are extremely good friends I also have a male Irish wolfhound pup and he fits in well with both!
Good luck with your search
I've all boys... so don't really understand the rationale for saying get a girl the second time? Is Rufus castrated? if he is, then either way bitch or dog it won't matter.
If he isn't castrated, then obviously you are going to have issues potentially with a bitch.

I think the biggest thing is the character of the dog, not the gender. Once you find a good breeder and litter, make the decision based on the puppies character rather than gender

Well I got a just over a year old rescue boy about 6months ago to go alongside my 3 and a half year old girl and we all get along swimmingly well!
I went for a slightly older rescue because 1) I couldn't cope with the demands of a pup while I'm working and 2) I could assess how the 2 of them were going to get long together straight away rather than waiting to see how the pup would grow up!
I have had 4 dogs together and all got on great non of them had been castrated, I have never had bitches if i were to get one I would get her spayed as soon as I could due to the seasons but thats just me. My friend told me she would never have a dog only bitches as dogs are more independent in her opinion. If i were you i would go with what ever you prefer. Some dogs in the park arent good with other dogs but fine with Bitches.
Thanks everyone think I will be going for another dog rather than bitch..
I'd rather stick to what I know and what I will be able to cope with.
Thanks again

Before we adopted our first boy dog, I read various times that male dogs are less affectionate than females. Ha, tell that to my boys! People do make me laugh
I think it's personal preference. I grew up with bitches, but when it came to adopting my own dogs I chose to have a mix of both male and female. I can't imagine only have one gender again.
