Thank you all for your advice.

Natalie - I think you're more than likely right in terms of "bugger off I don't like the way you looked at me" thing in that this little dog made a tentative attempt to come up and say hello. When I mean there was no contact, I mean he didn't bite. What he did do was stand right over this poor little dog and barge him about, before chasing the puppy around and by that stage he was growling but appearing to take a sort of sadistic pleasure - all cocked ears, hackles up and tippy-toes behaviour which I used to see when he was being the big intact man-dog. He's done it before with a Westie (again seemingly unprovoked and felt a great deal like "I'm going to do this because I can and I'm pretty sure you're not going to do anything". I suspect if they were to stand up to him he'd have run a mile.

Have to admit it has completely thrown me and whereas normally I'd not worry too much about meeting other dogs (just keep a careful eye) I've actively avoided dogs the last couple of days which is probably the worst thing I can do. We did meet a few on our walk, and one tiny little thing went up and barked at him and he hackled up and we kind of skirted it (I'd put him on the lead at this point). I have also bought a muzzle as a "just in case" sort of thing but having had him try to barge past me with it on, I've realised that there's a good chance that if he does that to another dog he could actually do them more damage than what he's currently doing which doesn't involve teeth.

I'm going to contact a behaviourist to get some advice (just need to wait for payday first) and was thinking that it might be an idea to join a dog-walking service and go along too to get him more socialised with someone with more doggy experience and see how it goes.

It's interesting about the hormonal changes having an effect on their behaviour too... I have noticed he's got a heck of a lot more naughty - he's been trying to do tug-of-war with his ball (which he's not allowed to do but seems to have regressed) and he's also been swiping food off the dining table which he wouldn't have dreamt of doing. It's like he's gone back to adolescence and sticking two fingers up at me a lot of the time though conversely when I do obedience training with him in the park he's been fantastic.

If it's any consolation when Jack was about 3 years old he did something very similar totally out of character, he a Terrier type dog came over to him and he picked it up by the head and threw it across the park, I was horrified, for a few months I avoided small dogs, pulling him away, get all tense and worked up about it.

It turns out he was in pain from OCD in his elbows, after he started treatment the behaviour never happened again.

He still tells young whipper snapper puppies off if they get all hyper and have ignored the Old man stare Laughing
