Hi,
My lovely Lab Nelson is a total loon at times. More some days than others - Iwondered what everyone felt was the best food for keeping him a little calmer? I was told Bakers is like giving Labs smarties - and yet the vet recommended food doesnt give you much change from £50 a sack! I adore my boy and love his zest for life but he finds it hard to settle and lie down at home and always seems almost twitchy? Any ideas?
Wanted to post a photo of my lovely boy but couldn't work out how to??!!
I split this off my thread in the hope that you will get some advice from more experienced members that way...
My 2 are both doing well on Skinners Salmon food which costs around 24pounds for 15kg. They get fed less than it recommends on the packet and I find one bag lasts about 6weeks. 2pounds a week to feed each of them a week isn't bad in my eyes! Although Luna is loony out on off lead walks at the moment she is in no way hyperactive and spends the rest of her time calmly sleeping, resting or training.
I hope you can find something in your budget that can suit your dog better than the Bakers.
How old is he? Do you do any training with him? Whilst it might be his food it may also be he needs his brain tiring out as well what's he currently fed on?

I'd be looking for a low protein food with no additives. My preference is Burns - Mini bites for puppies and Canine Alert (Chicken & Brown Rice) for adults. I pay £37 for a sack of Canine Alert, it is VAT free as it is aimed at assistance dogs (but nobody ever checks that).
I would avoid anything that has coloured bits in it, any sugars and artificial additives.
If your dog is just a pup be aware that they are like children and often become naughty and hyper when they are overtired. Also, if you leave the pup on its own whilst you are out it will probably spend that time sleeping and demand your full attention as soon as you return which will give the appearance of it being hyperactive all the time.
Definitely you need to try a food with no artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives (including EU permitted anti-oxidants). I have used Burns in the past, but mine are currently on Arden Grange. Skinners is another food I would consider, and other names which have started coming up are Orijen and Simpsons, though I haven't tried those.
Couple it with some training and plenty of exercise whenever you can, and hopefully you will start seeing a difference over the next few weeks, as it can take time to work through the dog's system.
