Posted: Sat Jan 28, 2012 7:34 pm Post subject: Any other HD and ED dogs as loopy as a Luna-tic??
I am really struggling to chill out on walks because she is bum-tucking at the speed of light in circles, instigating chase games with other dogs which end in a crash, is crazily flinging herself onto slippery, wet, muddy surfaces and bombing across pitted ground! I find myself cringing, worrying and staring at her in disbelief whilst holding my breath!
I am hoping that being off-lead on walks with other dogs is still rather a novelty (morning walks tend to be on lead as still too dark and we don't often meet other dogs on everyday walks) as I'm sure she was never this lunatic before but then again maybe I've become used to the relative calm of having her and Tucker walking singly or I've just forgotten what she was like and now I know about her health issues I'm assuming she'll change!!!
Touch wood! she seems to be surviving her recent loons without limps and a recent experiment with having her on anti-inflamms and then taking her off is showing no differences in her behaviour. There are certain scenarios I stick her on lead for just to relieve my own stress levels! Her muscles are looking good and strong again so I'm hoping that I'm gradually going to relax more and more as my confidence in her fitness grows! She's only taking her usual Glycoflex 3 supplements and an additional Chrondroitin supplement as the specialist noticed this ingredient was missing and wanted her to take it. She's due back for a check up at specialist next month if I get around to making an appointment.
Part of me was wondering if her behaviour could be caused by an adrenaline rush she has to have in order to cope with discomfort but I am not convinced....
Laura, you are not alone! Layla will have mental moments and plays a lot with Boo which can get boisterous! Out on walks she will run from one place to another to dig holes and seems to really enjoy herself. I don't throw a ball for her now but let her carry one and maybe do a few little gentle kicks of the ball so she can just get it without tearing off after it, which given the chance she definitely would still do! She is on Metacam at the moment and she has Salmon oil on her breakfast and yumove supplement once a day.
____________ Linda Layla and Taboo (never forgetting Scoobie my big brown bear 23.2.2000 - 21.1.2011 xx)
I think the truth is Luna is feeling good in herself and Labs are Labs, they don't do sensible.
Look at Captain Jack, being blind hasn't stopped him being a labrador.
I think if you took off their legs and put them on wheels, they would be leaping over bus's like Evil Kenevil, It's what they do, and why we love them.
Luna looked in great condition to me and Toby and i think she is just a very happy girl.
Take Care.
Gary and Toby.
Laura, it is all about quality of life and if Loon is feeling up to chasing around like the lunatic she is, then I'd just be letting her get on with it if she's not suffering for it
Bran can't be exercised at all at the moment as even short onlead walks leave him in a lot of pain for several days and offlead walks have seen him actually collapsing on his front end and we can't medicate him but he is still going to training as that only leaves him a little sore at the end of class (which he quickly recovers from) and I am going to let him go on a group walk or two (wearing the harness with a handle on!) before he has his elbows replaced because he is too young to be living the life of an old man all the time. I know that he'll struggle for a few days afterwards, but by God he'll have fun getting sore
____________ Sarah and Bran
Always watched over with love by our angel, Flora, from Rainbow Bridge
Bran Training
Oh gosh Sarah - to see Bran collapsing... Mega big hugs to you and him xxx
Luna face and shoulder planted the slippery rocks after losing her back legs on the mud covered rocks and I thought we were heading back for the car right then but she bounced back! She twinged something at one point in her back end and did a funny sit (she's done it before at Melton, and only at Melton so something to do with being there!) - I think it was a tail related problem as she lifted it right up - a bit of a massage and she was off again.
I have to say that my girl is looking as fit and trim, lively and eager as ever! The swimming has been working its magic and she adores being back at agility - even if she isn't jumping, just going through the jump wings - it's all about the pleasure of being alongside each other and working together. I try to walk the courses/sequences with her to slow her down!
I think the more she does with no ill effects the more my confidence with allowing her to loon will increase.
I'm glad I'm not alone choccieaddict! I'm giving Luna her retrieving 'fix' in water and only allowing a few controlled retrieves on land nowadays, perhaps doing more of these will help prevent the crazy bumtucks! I'm hoping to get more outside training time in as the daylight hours increase
I can't comment on HD, but I've got a dog with a 2 Elbow Grade.
Other than the bad grade, he's never indicated for a moment he has any mobility problems, he's just getting toward the end of his first full season picking up, he's probably done about 30 plus days, out of a team total of around 130.
I know his Elbow grade says one thing, but the dog tells me another, I listen to the dog.
Mojo is a tad more sensible now she is approaching 8 years old, however she still charges about, plays chase, leaps over logs, etc, etc and has done even though her elbows are rotten and her front feet are deformed with Arthritis.
I try to allow her to do whatever she is comfortable doing, after all she only has one life and she needs to live it. I do worry about how sore she makes herself, but in truth she rarely makes herself that sore.
Try not to worry too much and live for the moment like Luna does, after all, who knows what tomorrow brings anyway.
No advice but just to say I'm glad Luna feels up to looning about, hopefully that means she feels fully fit again and Graham will agree when he sees her.
So sorry to hear Bran's still feeling so sore with walks Sarah and I hope that the pack walks allow him to have a great time without too many side effects.
Thanks everyone she is currently trying to persuade me to take her out and I am attempting to communicate to her that she will be heading out for a jaunt with Toby and Tucker later... and then she'll be going swimming at the pool....she likes her routine though and is persisting...!!!
I feel your pain and know exactly what you're talking about
Hatts is mental when allowed off lead, however, she doesn't know when she should stop (she'd keep running even if in pain!) so I have to put her on lead to give her "steady" time - last time she was off lead she went off at warp speed bum tucking and came back on 3 legs now she's back on 10 mins lead walk a day!
If she hasn't shown any signs of being in pain/discomfort during and after her walks then chances are she's doing fine otherwise, I'd probably limit her loony times
With Hattie we're one step forward and ten steps back - I can't wait for the day she can have off lead time without hurting her elbow (and hips!).
