I've read or heard somewhere that when having meals you should have yours first and then feed the puppy. Is this important or do people do the opposite? I just can't imagine coming down in the morning, making breakfast for myself and my son while Cookie watches and waits, and then doing his, he will be starving!

Thanks,

Tracy x

This is just one of those dominance theories that holds no weight.

Mine all have their breakfast before me, not had any problems so far Smile

As long as they don't try to eat mine when I am eating it I am happy Wink

our girl gets fed first thing after nipping out for the loo.

we have never made her wait while we eat, in fact i think making her wait would increase the chance of her begging., or hanging around the table because she is hungry.

she eats her meal then normally plays with her toys while we eat.

in the evening we often eat before her but not always.

Mine both get fed first once they have gone out and had a wee.

If anything - it stops them scrounging while we have ours

Thanks both of you, I'll go with what I felt, seems cruel to make them wait, and like you said it would increase the chance of begging while we were eating.

I'm sure there will be many more questions to come!

I`m the same, CJ always eats before I do, yes he sits and watches me eat but he does it from his chair and not right beside me, I think that if I didn`t feed him first he`d sit and drool while I was having mine.

Mine are fed first thing before I have my breakfast but they wait for their second meal until we've had dinner around 6pm, it's just our routine which they've both grown up with. Smile

I always have breakfast before the dogs. Milly's not so bad, but Ivan was such a pain in the 'arris at mealtimes that he needed some intensive reinforcement that when we're eating, he's to stay clear whether he's starving or not. Once he got the idea that in order to get his food, he had to REALLY behave around mealtimes, he did great.

That's why we decided on the "Us First" training. It did work, he does have relapses every so often, but in general he's OK now. If I started giving him his dinner first then he'd pester and pester me during my dinner/brekkie wondering where his was.

I think it depends on your dog. If he's a pesterer, and feeding him before you doesn't works then try the other way round. If he seems to do OK being fed first then stick with that.....whatever suits your household.

Harry is fed before we get our breakfast, otherwise he would be sat at the table with the kids eating theres. If he waited until we had finished he would have a very long wait as I dont get chance once the kids have eaten its then all go until flying out of the door. In the eve, well it just depends if hes asking for his meal, i usualy try and get our dinner ready for 5ish which is to early for Harry on most days. So he will wait until about 7-8pm he doesnt mind to much as he gets any left overs (yes naughty i know)
