Lately ive been thinking about Ted and mental stimulation. He gets an hour and a half of physical excersise everyday, thats a 15minute lead walk each way to the park and an hour of free play once there.Im home with him all day and play with him on and off as i go along doing my work, then i'll do a bit of treat training.Or i'll give him a meal in his kong. Then when my 3 come home from school they play with him.Im just worried if he is bored at all.I read somewhere that a dog can go insane without mental stimulation,no matter how much physical exercise they get and im now worried. He doesnt seem bored,he does steal things and run off but i just put that down to him being a young lab,any ideas or advice? xx
It sounds to me as though he has a life many dogs would envy!
You could always do a bit more training if you are really concerned, but if he doesn't seem bored, I wouldn't worry. The more exercise he has (am assuming he's past the year mark?), the fitter he will be of course, but as you say, he's a young Lab.
Mr Moo still counter surfs and he turned 13 yesterday
He is a lucky boy, I am sure he will never go insane.
After an hour and a half walk and play in the morning I imagine he is ready to chill out for a few hours so that he is fit to play with his young humans when they get home.
Mischa always comes alive when my gran kids come over, she loves young people.
awww thanks for the nice replies,i think i just worry too much.He does seem very happy and chilled out after his walk and yes he comes to life when the kids get home,he thinks hes one of them,They lie on the floor and he jumps over them or they all jump off the couch at the same time .I am very lucky that i get to work from home and be with my boy.Think i might start using his clicker a bit more just to engage his brain, thanks again xx
Nice life .... my day is similar to yours (without the kids!)
I work from home and Frankie is around, so a good lead walk in the morning usually tires him until lunchtime. If he is getting a bit fidgety and lets me know if he is bored, then either a 5 minute kick about with a ball in the garden, or playing 'go find' with balls or treats hidden in the house or garden seems to keep him happy - I usually tie this into my coffee break. A burst of clicker training - just 5 or 10 minutes at a time seems to tire him out nicely!
ah yes I'm missing a glow ball from mine too, hmm better get one
What jobs are you folk doing from home? It's nice isn't it, seems to fit in nicely with having a dog, my Sam is much the same. Don't think there's any chance of them going insane with boredom unless its from them being 'forced' to spend so much time with us!
xYes i think i drive Ted insane by constantly hugging and kissing him and talking to him in a silly baby voice, well he is only 9months isnt he .My job is nothing special. My lovely Dad was a joiner and owned his own business,he died in an accident so the business was left to me and my brother, who has kept it going.I just do bits and bobs.Ideally id love to be a midwife,im giving it serious thought as im 34 and not getting any younger
