For those that read my previous posts you will know that the glow ball will be the death of me but there is no way I am going to lose another one! So here is the next instalment. I will first set the scene.
It’s 6am this morning and very dark, hardly any moonlight as it was quite cloudy. I took both Amber and Millie to a local park which is accessed via a wooded area. I don’t bother with a torch as both dogs have light up collars and the path through is quite reasonable under foot and I know it very well.
Millie had the glow ball in her mouth, but for some reason dropped it and off it rolled across the path and down a 10 foot banking which is covered in saplings and brambles. We had only just got into the wood and it is quite dense. Unfortunately at the bottom of the banking is a river and the ball went all the way down, followed by Millie. It plopped into the river but Millie put a paw in and stopped. It was reasonably quick flowing and there was no way she was going in. Blunderwoman to the rescue!! I scrambled down the banking, hanging onto branches and bushes en route as the ball was held in a ‘dam’. I couldn’t reach it and knew I had only five minutes to retrieve it before the light went off and it would be lost forever. I reached it with a branch but could not get it and off it went down river. The undergrowth was too dense to get through so I scrambled back up the bank, ran across the top bath and clambered back down through the brambles and bushes further down stream and awaiting it’s arrival.
As it approached I still couldn’t reach it and Millie jumped in and did a brilliant water retrieve. Ball saved!! I was feeling shattered, but pleased the ball was safe and turned to start the climb back up the banking. Unfortunately I did not realise that Amber had come down to help too and was stood immediately behind me. I ended up falling backwards right over Amber and flat on my back in the middle of the brambles. Millie and Amber both trotted off and back up the banking as if nothing had happened. I was covered in mud and undergrowth. Bearing in mind it was very dark I could not see how bad but could feel it stuck to me. I didn’t realise the pesky little brambles could hurt so much and eventually managed remove them all from my hands.
The rest of the walk passed without further events. Millie got to play with her much loved ball in the park. It was only when I got home that I saw actually how much mud was stuck to my knees, bottom and elbows. I looked like a character from Rambo. Good job it was dark. How many owners can saw however that there dog can do a water retrieve in the dark? Clever girl.
Note to self however is that Millie does not get the ball until the ‘danger area’ is now safely passed.
____________ Gillian, Millie & Arya, watched over by Becky, Arwen & Amber from the Bridge. Run fast & free
I know I shouldn't laugh as it's not nice when these things happen...
At least you had a chance they are yellows imagine the same event with the chocolate or black mischeif makers.
