Hello.
Bodie had his first Vet appt. yesterday!! He is perfect except the Doc says he's a little overweight. Wants him to lose a pound. Newbie mistake. I'll take the blame for that. Anyway, my dilemna is we are trying to teach him his name, and to sit, and stay, and all the other puppy things. How can we train with treats if he's supposed to be on a diet?? Any ideas for fat-free, health, but still taste good treats??

You could use some of his kibble and just give him a little less at mealtimes? Perhaps this is a bit boring but if you alternate with small pieces of apple and just the odd tiny cube of cheese it will keep him guessing what is coming.

Do you feed him kibble? Im asking because we weigh out Seb's daily allowance and hold some back to use as treats for training. He's obsessed with any food so doesn't care that it's the sane as he's had for breakfast/dinner. It means he doesn't go over his daily allowance of food but still gets 'treats'.

Good luck Very Happy

How old is Bodie? Do not worry too much about vets and weights they are notoriously bad at lab weights!

Wow! I'm surprized at the quick reply's!!
I put a quick blurb on the introduction page. Feebarn-Bodie is only 7 1/2 weeks. I'm not terribly upset about the vets scolding, trust me I've had worse! hehe.
Dreacat- We do feed him kibble but I woulda figured that if he's getting the same food, it really wouldn't be a treat.
Barneysma- I thought of carrots or apples, but my wife freaked out that he was still only a baby and shouldn't have "people food" yet.
What are you opinions on human foods/fruits?

Oh my.... don't do anything at all about weight at that age!!!!! Pups gain and lose weight so easily... mostly it will gain and gain for now!

Avoid vined fruits - grapes, raisins etc as they are toxic to dogs even in small quantitys. Frozen carrots are great for teething pups - apples too - but we careful with the seeds if you are feeding a lot of them I believe they contain small amounts of cyanide!!! I'm like the harbinger of doom!!!!!

I am no expert on dogs diets but personally I feel it is good for their tummies to introduce a little variety. If you are worried you could introduce just a little bit of one thing for a couple of days and then build it up (a bit like weaning a baby), but if your lab is a true lab it will be helping itself to human food whenever it gets the opportunity Laughing Laughing

It depends on how greedy Bodie is. Seb is like a waste disposal unit so doesn't care that it's the same. Any food is a treat Rolling Eyes Very Happy

I know what your wife means about people food. I started out the same way but now he gets pieces of carrot and apple too Wink

I wouldn't worry too much about it now but good luck anyway!

How can a puppy be overweight at 7 1/2 weeks? Even at that age there can be quite a variation depending on what the parents were like. Don't be bullied by the vet. Just smile sweetly and pretend to agree. As long as you don't go overboard with food and treats you shouldn't go far wrong. If the vet says it again next time you go, tell him that your pup's parents were both chunky labs so you expect him to be a little heavier than average.

The above suggestions to use part of the daily kibble allowance or carrot/apple are both good ones. You can also add small amounts of banana, sausage, chicken or cheese as training treats but chop really small and consider reducing the kibble allowance to compensate.

It is good for puppies to try different foods but introduce new foods slowly so that you can identify anything that doesn't agree with them.

To give u some idea a puppy should gain around 0.5-1 kg per week as an average for a normal lab pup. He might look a little podge this week but next week he'll have a growth spurt and look too skinny lol don't worry too much at his age Smile
