Just having a little wander around the internet as you do and Ive come across The Labrador Retriever Club of Great Britain. Id really like to join, find out more information, support in any way I can and get to find out what is going on in the breed.
However....it says that the application form has to have both a proposer and a seconder and there is space on the form for those people to sign them. Those people have to be a current member of the club. The only other people I know 'in real life' that have labs dont know anything about breed clubs
How on earth does a mere mortal join something like this then?
I belong to the German Shorthaired Pointer club and again you need to be proposed and seconded by current members to join. I go to the GSP club training so two of the trainers there signed the form for me.
I would think some dedicated breeders would be members of the Lab club as would people involved in the working side of the breed! On here may well be the best place to find them!
I'm a member I'm not sure what the official rules are (ie if you're allowed to 'propose' someone you've never actually met...), but assuming you are, I could be one. An alternative would be to ring the membership secretary and tell them the truth. They're normally very helpful and realise that you can't necessarily get to know people before you're doing 'club' things. If memory serves me correctly, you're in the North West? You might want to check out the North West Labrador Retriever Club too - I'm a member of that as well, and didn't actually know anyone when I joined, but the secretary sorted it for me
I don't think you actually have to have met them - as long as you have some sort of connection with them (like a forum )
I needed proposers for UGS but my trainer took my form off me and handed it back to me signed - haven't a clue who the people were who proposed me! From the UGS point of view I think it's so they don't end up signing up any animal rights people, as UGS are more about promoting gundog breeds as working gundogs rather than representing the breeds as a whole. If that makes sense?? Or at least that's what I was told - I don't know if the same goes for the LRC......
Janice, give the secretary a shout and ask for help. She will be able to suggest local members that might be willing to propose or second you. What about your breeder? Is she/he a member?
Otherwise, she will probably suggest a club event (show or working) where you may be able to go along and watch, or even help, and meet some members.
It is hard making those initial steps, but should be worth it once you have taken the plunge!
Well thank you to you brilliant people on here, my membership form for NWLRC is now winging its way to the Membership Secretary and will be proposed and seconded at their meeting on Sunday.
I just sent her an email via the website and explained what involvement Id had with Labs (ie Guide Dogs, Maple, wanting to become an Assured Breeder etc) and part of their ethos is that they like to support owners of the breed so she said that she would sort it for me
Its very local to me really, so it will also be nice to find out what is going on, I might make some new friends
