ok, i'm finally posting in the correct part of the forum and hoping for some replies about the condition my girl has following her spay 8 days ago. She got an infection on the site and then developed a hard sausage shaped and sized lump. I think it is a seroma, judging from what i have found online. I think it might be because OOna is an active type and i didn't keep her inactive enough. I did try though but after day three she had had enough of being ill. A second course of antibiotics seem to have started clearing up the infection but the swelling is really alarming. How have other labs fared with this problem? How common is it? How did was it treated? OOna is having augmentin and anti-inflammatories.

Hi Sue

my understanding of Seromas is that they are a wound that fills with fluid usually after surgery and this can be to quite a large size.

The fluid will disperse itself gradually over three to four weeks but if it is in an uncomfortable place it can be drained although not usually a preferred cause of action as it can introduce infection to the site.

A friend of mine had one - humans get them too Very Happy - and it dispersed of its own accord over about 4 weeks. It didn't hurt was just a bit uncomfortable.

So I would just keep a close eye on it. Can't do any harm to have the ABs but should hopefully clear itself in due course Very Happy

Welcome to you and Oona BTW hello2

xx

Hi, sorry I saw your post on the other thread, I meant to reply but forgot Rolling Eyes .

Mischa had a Seroma when she was spayed, it was picked up by the nurse when we went for post op check.

The vet reduced it by draining it with a syringe, no seditives were required, and we had to keep her activity to the minimum for another 7 days if I remember correctly.

If you use a crate, maybe encouraging OOna to have some enforced rest with a Kong or bone may help. Short walks on lead were allowed.

I would go back to vet and get them to check it, better to be safe than sorry eh.

Hope she is soon ok.

June

Coco had one too - vet just drained it with a syringe and gave an antibacterial spray. No sedation (no sense no feeling) Wink

Charlie also had one which just disappeared on its own after a couple of weeks. Vet checked it but said it would go on its own accord. The hardest part was having short on the lead walks only for two more weeks.

thanks for your replies. OOna's tummy just looks awful and on top of that i have others making me feel guilty for the spay in the first place. the only thing that makes me feel better is her herself as she really is fine...which of course is what caused this bad outcome in the first place. she won't be kept down!!

Never feel guilty about spaying! You have saved her having unwanted pups, pregnancy complications, some cancers.....

She'll have to take it easy for about 2more weeks and then back to normal with no more seasons to cause trouble and prevent walks!

Luna had a huge seroma form - the stitches looked like they would burst but it dispersed itself with rest - Luna had been too active too. I got the vet to check it a few times.

Your girl will need the medicines if she has had an infection as well. If the lump is painful, red and inflamed or has discharge or smells funny do head back to the vet as Luna's seroma was nothing more than a big lump of normal skin.
