Hi all please help :O( Our 12 week old pup Bailey is being VERY nippy ! He is being quite aggressive with it too. My partner is covered in scratches and bite marks, and he got me yesterday too on my thumb. We have tried vinegar on our hands, tapping him on the nose, nothing seems to help, any ideas on what we can do. He is not being like it with other people, only us his new family. We realise he is trying to be 'TOP DOG' so to speak, but he is such an adorable puppy when we take him to 'Puppy Training Classes', but as soon as we get him home he starts being 'Nippy' again. We are running out of ideas as to what else we can do to try and curb this behaviour, any ideas ?

Firstly this is normal behaviour. He isn't trying to be top dog. He just needs to know the right way to behaviour. It can happen when they are over tired.... If he's just come home from a puppy class he'll be exhausted but over excited, like a toddler. Try popping him in his crate or bed with a kong or biscuit and he will probably flake out.
Try to praise the good behaviour like when he plays with his toys and not your arms! If he is getting nippy either re direct to a toy or just stand up and walk away giving him no attention. If he calms, go back with a toy and encourage him to play with that instead

Puppys are little nippers!!!!

They do grow out of it, but as suggested he could be crabby and need a nap!!

There is a sticky about 'puppys do bite and hard'!!!! worth finding it!!

Good luck, it really doesnt last forever Smile Smile

As has been mentioned, he's not trying to be top dog, he's just being a puppy. I don't buy into the whole "pack" theory anyway. It's just that at the moment, until he gets the idea from lots of training, this is the only way he has of telling you he's bored/hungry/teething etc.

As the other have said he's not trying to be top dog he's just playing with you the way he would play with his litter mates, distract him with toy or do a bit of training sit etc...

He's not trying to hurt you as the others have said he simply wants to play with you and doesn't know how to go about asking nicely yet. Those stickies the others suggested are great and also as seen as its still winter and cold wear trousers and long sleeved tops for now and save your skin puppy doesn't know that humans are fragile yet but he will just keep practising.

I've been ripped to shreds over the past few weeks and what has stopped it in its track is getting a small tin, putting some coins in it and really shaking it when he starts his biting.

Worked like a charm and now he thinks twice and I don't even have to rattle the tin any more, just reach for it and he stops.

It's almost completely stopped now after just a few goes with the tin.

Hi
I am afraid this is typical lab puppy behaviour and the amount they nip is different with different pups.
We had to ignore the behaviour with Buddie and leave the room although it never got really nasty. We also used to give him a suitable chew toy when he started and praise himn for chewing that. When he ever got over excited we used a tin filled with pebbles and as Razamakaz says we only have to reach for it and he would stop. We sometimes use that as he has grown older when he has excessivly barked. As I say its not all the time and we don't scare him, its just shocks him a little and it seems to work.
On the other hand Honey is a dreadful chewer and even now at 5 months seh seems to love to mouth you r hands as soon as you stroke her. But she doesn't hurt and it really is mouthing! although of course not encouraged!!

Good luck with you pup it will get better xx
