Digs has always chewed his claws and I was just wondering if anyone knew why or if there is anything I can do to stop him.
Basically he'll sit there and just chew - never his feet, just his claws. I can hear his teeth on his claws and sometimes he will literally just grab a claw and pull If I realise he's doing it I always distract him and he stops and forgets about it again. He pulls most at his foreclaws (front dewclaws) but generally isn't fussy about which ones he chews.
I don't think they're sore as he's happy for me to touch his feet and his claws. I did wonder if it was the pollen itching him in the summer but he still does it now... They are at the moment possibly a tad long but he still did it after having them trimmed. He's never actually pulled one off but I do wonder sometimes if he does manage to nibble the ends off them as the odd one or two does look a bit odd.
Unless he's actually damaging them or makes them sore, I would think he's just giving himself a manicure.
Both of my Poodles do it and they don't only do their own nails, they do mine and Pickle's too (no doubt they would do Mojo's as well but she has tickly feet and won't let them ).
It's just a natural grooming behaviour as far as I can make out. My cats do it all the time, so I've never thought twice about any of my dogs doing it.
Perhaps he'd like you to file them, buff them and paint them a pretty pink .
Ha I'll ask him next time he'll probably quite like it! not that mine ever look that nice - I'd have to stop chewing them myself first.

Will he do mine? I have to pay £15
He might try - I warn you though he has no concept of being gentle. It's a good thing I like it when he plays rough. Although the morning earwashes/nibbles aren't always greatly received!
He likes to chew my hair perhaps there's something he's not telling me!

I once went to a pet wholesale show in the USA with the company and they had dog nail varnish and dog jewelery. Amongst many other things like a dog poo calender.
