Carys, poorly pumpkin, is lame in not one but two legs. She is a bit of a thug when she plays with Betty so she's currently on VERY restricted exercise and rest.
We have a store of Metacam prescribed by the vet for such situations for the oldies, to be administered if they show signs of stiffness. I have used it many many times before, usually at night.
I wondering if it may be better for Carys if we give it to her in the morning for a few days?
If she does not improve she will of course be whizzed off to the vet. That in itself will be a challenge as on lead the adrenaline starts and she shows no sign of limping!
When my old Anna was getting a bit rickety I used to give her Metacam. I always gave it in the morning, finding that she started to get relief quite quickly. One thing I would say is dont give more that needed to do the job. I found with Anna, who weighed in at 30kg, giving the equivalent for a 10Kg dog suited her fine.

My Ellie has been on it for the first time following her spay last Thursday I have been giving her it in the morning she is 28kg and have followed the dosing instructions - she is not showing any signs of stiffness and limping now but have noticed she is sleeping a lot more than usual. Would that be the effects of the Metacam and why you suggest a smaller dose?
Thanks all. I am almost 100% certain if we went to the vets this is what he'd prescribe anyway.
I gave her a dose for 30 kilo last night (as it says do a double dose for the first dose - I would normally only do a half dose anyway) then but would certainly give less if it gives relief.
Now I'm torn, she had a dose last night, will be kept under house arrest today but do you think a very small dose this evening and another tomorrow morning would do her any harm? I always give anti inflams with food and she's already had breakfast today.
I give Layla her recommended (liquid form ) dose of Metacam in the morning straight after her breakfast. The vet has said to me that at some point, we can try an injection which is safer to use than long term Metacam.
____________ Linda Layla and Taboo (never forgetting Scoobie my big brown bear 23.2.2000 - 21.1.2011 xx)
I'd give her a half dose this evening and then the other half tomorrow with her brekkie, then give it to her in the mornings from now on.
I know when I need anti inflams, I'd rather take them so they are working during the daytime, as that's when I'm moving about.

I know you asked John, but I found Metacam acted like a sedative when I gave it to Mojo. So yes, it could be why your girl is sleeping more than usual. As with all anti inflams, they can be very harsh on the stomach, even if given with food, so you should always try to give the smallest dose possible. Just enough so it has the desired pain killing effect.
Just wrote a lovely long post, and before I could post it we had a power cut and I lost the lot!!!! Most has been answered now, but just going out but when I return I'll post my thoughts.
I give my 11 and a half year old GSD metacam everyday now for his joints and find I get better results if I give him it on a night with his tea. I was talking to the vet about it and she said there had been some research about evening usage having good results. I think for him its because he can have a pain free nights rest which helps him be a little less stiff when he wakes. We used it only as and when he needed it previously and would use the lowest dose possible.
