I know many people will disagree but I think castration does make dogs a bit more biddable. My puppy Django was getting to be a right old tearaway when we had him castrated at 10 months and he has calmed down quite a lot. I feel much more confident with him on walks now and he minds his own business much better.

Fingers crossed!

Lovely Mandie,

First off, big hugs for you!.

I've seen how wonderful you are with Max, and how much of a good boy he is too. He walked beautifully on the lead when we were out last time (with Hattie in the pram Wink ). He's at that age where they do run off, and they forget all training, especially as he's now finding out about girlfriends! For all Baxter's faults and issues (there's plenty!) his recall is 100%, however, prior to his castration he went flying off across the park on 2 occasions to get to a in season girl. Since castration, all that has completely stopped.

We all have low days (as you know from my tears over Baxter in front of everyone Embarassed ) but the good days generally outweigh the bad, and that's what you have to think about.

You'll get there with Max, I promise Wink

What training school do you take him to, just out of interest?

Big hugs for you.
xxx

Oh thanks Sue, that is really kind of you. I think I'm feeling a bit down generally at the mo and that always makes things seem harder. You are right though, we need to just keep our heads down and keep going Smile

We have persevered with Writtle after trying a few different classes/instructors there and they have been good for him and he is progressing in class and engaging his brain much more. Their only answer for lunging though is put him on a half check and use lead corrections. Whilst that helps give some more control at times, his desire to get to other dogs overrides everything in real life outside a class and I don't feel hitting fire with fire is ultimately helping.

I have spoken to this lady http://www.athenae.co.uk/ Jane Williams who is a behaviourist and trainer based in Witham. She looks good and said she absolutely would not use a half-check on him. We are going to have a one to one with her and she said we can do some work with her dogs at Black Notley clinic for off lead recall and on lead control. I'd like to try that and she also does classes/good citizen awards so maybe a change would be good right now.

Hope Hattie & Baxter are well, hugs to you all xxx
